GuestI thought it was a great idea to have the Christmas lights ride (weather issues aside), but I didn’t hear about it in time to plan anyway. I don’t have an idea right now, but I would like to suggest that the rides show up on the “group rides” section of the BikeArlington website so we know where to look for information about them, hopefully in plenty of time to make plans to go.

ParticipantHow about a spring flowers ride? I know there are a ton of places where flowers grow wild and in beds along the roads. In a month or so they will be coming into bloom. I don’t know how feasible this will be or how easy it will be to figure out a good route.

ParticipantWas chatting at lunch today with a few like-minded Arlington cyclists about the usefulness of short rides that folks just getting into/back into cycling might enjoy. Nothing too ambitious, yet still worth checking out. I liked the idea of a bridge ride, which would stop and check out each of the VA-DC river crossings (starting with Key, down to the 14th St Bridge). I also thought that a Mall in the Moonlight ride might be worth trying at some point in the summer. Any suggestions?

ParticipantI’ll check out the Hump bridge on the way home today to see if it is conducive to such a ride.
Lots of people know the major trails in the area (W&OD, Custis, Capitol Croissant, Mt, Vernon, etc.) but there are other paths that connect things together that might be good for including in a themed ride. 4-mile run, Holmes Run, and the like. Maybe we can work up something that includes some of these. Not much of Arlington is really “off the beaten path”, but some paths are beaten more than others. I’ll try and look into that in my 3-wheeled explorations.
Love,
Pete

ParticipantHow about 25 miles miles out for a BBQ sandwich and 25 miles trying not to puke on the way back. Both ways at a fairly solid 17.5 miles per hour.

Once I’m back on a 2-wheeler I can do that. Right now I’m pushing pretty hard to average 15mph on the trike.

Not really for new cyclists, but in the bridge theme a longish 26 mile one-way ride starting at in VA crossing the Potomac on Chain Bridge, riding down the C&O/CCT to Georgetown, recrossing on the Key Bridge, down the MVT, recrossing on Roosevelt Bridge, past the Kennedy Center along the waterfront past the Lincoln Memorial and over Memorial Bridge to Arlington Cemetary. Then down the MVT to the 14th St (George Mason) Bridge, past the Jefferson Memorial, a lap around Hains Point then recross the 14th St Bridge, down the MVT past Reagan/National, through Alexandria, cross the Wilson Bridge and arrive at National Harbor.

I like that, a short 26 miles after work or a Sunday recovery ride…If we started in Old Town and ended in National Harbor we could ride the water taxi back. Tim is much better at planning routes than I am, I always end up on some super highway that looked cool on Google. I should not be allowed to plan rides.

Hahaha… Can’t imagine HONA on a trike. I’d be grabbing the brakes to keep from rolling down the hills backward. Give me about 3 weeks.
We’re going for coffee in National Harbor Sunday morning if you wanna ride.
