I was skiing last week and some dude came down the trail blasting something that sounded like an auto-tuned boyband. And I thought, what’s wrong with you people? You are out here in the great outdoors when you could be sitting at a desk or in traffic and you need to have that. And I still think that, but some people probably don’t have the voices in their heads like I do.

Maybe some of us don’t want to hear those voices all the time…

    Poor dyslexic Bob.

Poor deluded folks who think they have great taste in music.

In general I agree. I won’t blast mine loud enough to compete with external noise, so usually it’s off when I’m next to traffic or near Gravelly Point, say. But especially those rides home in the dark, on sections where I’m mostly alone, it’s entertaining to have music, volume just enough for my listening radius w/o inflicting it on everyone.

ShawnoftheDread would rather have a long, intense conversation with his riding pals – amIright?

I don’t wear earbuds on my rides, but mostly because I find them a little cumbersome. But I really think the “dangers” of using them while riding are overstated. I have speakers in my motorcycle helmet though, which are awesome. Although it draws some weird looks at stop lights when I have Slipknot cranked up in my helmet and am singing along with songs like “The Devil in I,” but I’m the only one who can hear the music…

I don’t play music on my rides, but here are some selections from a running playlist to keep the legs churning:

The Arcade Fire = Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)
The Chemical Brothers – Dissolve (Bloody Beetroots Remix)
The Chemical Brothers – Loops of Fury
The Clash – Train in Vain
    Elastica – Stutter
    Hugh Myrone – Exclusive CoupĂ©
Jahan Lennon – Can’t Ruin My Fun
The Jesus and Mary Chain – Head On
    Kavinsky – Testarossa Autodrive
    Kristin Kontrol – X-Communicate
    M|O|O|N – Hydrogen
    Moby – Natural Blues
Parquet Courts – Stoned and Starving
Primal Scream – Shoot Speed/Kill Light
    Quadrant – Faithless
Queens of the Stone Age – Go with the Flow
Republica – Ready to Go (Original Version)
Roni Size/Reprazent – the entire New Forms album
Run The Jewels – Close Your Eyes and count to F***)
The Soft Pack – Answer to Yourself
    Tangerine Dream – Le Parc

I think Judd and others mentioned it already, but Pandora, Spotify, and Google music are all great at finding other songs you might like based on things you thumb up or whatever. Their algorithms are pretty damn good. I would have never found half the dub/reggae bands or metal bands I listen to without the suggestions. Having the worlds musical library at your fingertips changes the experience, not unlike NetFlix etc. changed the way we consume movies and shows.

NOFX’s “I heard they suck live” and “They’ve actually gotten worse live” are fun live albums. Some live albums flow into a nice long soundtrack.

Had this one stuck in my head [La Femme – Sphynx] as I rode through Crystal City yesterday morning.

Had to wait all day to ask my wife who it was since I only caught a few bars of it as it played in the kitchen when I first heard it. The best my mind could reproduce was an unintelligible version of what my brain considered french and it stuck with me for many, many miles.
