Start your Pedals, America – The Get Up & Ride

    National Bike Challenge Is On!

New online competition will engage and connect bicyclists from coast to coast.

Washington, D.C. – March 21, 2012 – Launched today by a powerful alliance of the Kimberly-Clark Corporation, the League of American Bicyclists, Bikes Belong and Endomondo, the National Bike Challenge aims to inspire and empower millions of Americans to ride their bikes for transportation, recreation and better health.

The Challenge is simple: Sign up as an individual or as a team, log your miles, share your stories and encourage others to join you. Riders will compete for prizes and awards on the local and national level, including a Grand Prize trip through California wine country from Trek Travel. Already, organizations in 26 states have committed to participate and have started warming up for the May 1 start date on the Challenge website: nationalbikechallenge.org.

“The League is excited about this unique opportunity to share the many benefits of bicycling and offer a fun, engaging entry point for new riders,” said Andy Clarke, President of the League of American Bicyclists. “There’s nothing like riding a bike with your friends and colleagues and the National Bike Challenge will create a new social network of cyclists stretching from coast to coast.”

The online initiative was piloted by Kimberly-Clark (K-C), Endomondo and the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin in 2011. The idea was sparked by K-C research engineer, Rob Gusky, and Kimberly-Clark extended the competition to its 57,000 global employees. The Challenge proved to be a great team building and wellness activity for K-C’s sustainability efforts globally. Participating K-C employees logged 357,739 miles globally, with U.S. employees pedaling 182,210 miles. The success in Wisconsin led to a bigger vision: Taking the challenge to the national level.

“We’re pleased to be the national sponsor of the Challenge as it supports the wellness of our employees and the communities we serve, while contributing to improved air quality by replacing car travel with clean, healthy bicycle trips,” said Jan Spencer, K-C’s senior vice president of continuous improvement/procurement/ sustainability. “This year, K-C is providing an extra incentive for our global team members: The Kimberly-Clark Foundation will donate 10 cents to the League of American Bicyclists for every mile logged by a K-C employee during the 2012 Challenge.”

The platform for the National Bike Challenge was created by Endomondo, a social fitness network with 7.5 million users worldwide. “Riding a bike for transportation is among the top five activities for our European users, and we look forward to helping expand this kind of biking in the U.S. with this campaign,” said Mette Lykke, Co-Founder of Endomondo. “Logging your miles is easy and the social interaction with co-workers, family and friends really makes it fun and motivating to get up and ride.”

“Bikes Belong is delighted to be a part of the National Bike Challenge, which provides all the tools to help more people ride bikes more often,” said Bruno Maier, vice president of Bikes Belong. “We’re looking forward to seeing all the different types of riders who participate. The Challenge is a great way to encourage people to live healthier lives.”

The Challenge runs from May 1 to August 31, 2012, but the public is invited to sign up now and get warmed up. For more information, visit http://www.nationalbikechallenge.org. Join us at facebook.com/nationalbikechallenge.

Thanks :p Once consularrider is back and Zanna is logging miles again we should have a fuller squad! I see Dana is already back logging.

I have faith in y’all. You’ll be up here with the C and B teams in no time. :D

This challenge is really kind of fun. 2MC changed a little this year and is cool, but lacks the personal and team challenge that it had in years past. I love it, but the National Bike Challenge is more to my taste this year. :D I’ll make up a post about it.

    Rock on folks. :D

I was on travel to the building code hearings in Dallas. Hearings started at 0800 and went to 2130. Not much time to do anything

Got home last night and rode this morning. Back in the saddle. Go A team!

Now that is a good idea! If we on the B team can try to shadow those on the A and C teams then every time they log miles so will we, in addition to the miles we normally accrue. Dirt’s tactic would work perfectly if he wasn’t so cheerful and encouraging about it. Sheesh… the goal is to demoralize. :) Now who thinks they’re fast enough and has the endurance to keep up with Mr. Kelley?

A tip for all you mileage loggers – log your data on the proper day! I logged a short grocery trip from last night as today and my morning commute today I logged as tomorrow. No wonder it wasn’t updating properly! Oops.

No no no. My whole goal in this is to raise the mood and spirits of all cyclists. I think we can all have fun with this together and be the best darn cyclists we can. Sounds good, doesn’t it? I’ll just make sure that I do 1 or 2 more laps than anyone I’m riding with and we’ll crush them!!!!

Mr. Kelley obviously has no equal. I certainly can’t keep up with his speed…. but I am at least in the same solar system as Tim when it comes to endurance. My plan is to utilize a harness and leash to keep him within striking distance.

    Love, peace and harmony.

    Dirt.

For the briefest of periods, I’m leading the team (yay for zoo trips!).

How does consularrider have 12 points? That should be impossible! (Maybe a ride that started before midnight?)

I haven’t yet logged any trips on Endomondo for May and the standings now show me with zero points. I left the country on Tuesday, and didn’t get a chance to download that morning’s ride before my flight. I’m letting down the team since I’m only getting spinning in at the hotel fitness center, and that doesn’t count for the challenge. I hope to get some outdoor riding in on Saturday and Sunday if I can handle the altitude.

That site is horrible. I’m still logging my rides though. Even the 1/2 mile to the gym and back. Yes, I ride the 1/2 mile to the gym. Don’t judge me.

    Consularrider,
Not to worry. I think most or all of us will have business trips, vacations, family obligations, etc. that may interfere with our riding for a time over the course of the four month challenge. Yours just happened to be in the first few days of it. I have two week-long trips that I know of where I’ll have that problem. Be careful with the altitude, but have fun if you do get a chance to bike. I’m sure we’ll see you around when you get back!

+1 It’s hateful- the other Group Health Commuter Challenge has a super easy to use site that actually updates instantly (for those of us looking for instant gratification)

Report your miles guys! Only 6/9 have numbers on the board! CCrew indicated that you’ll only be able to report miles until Monday of the following week.

I regret to say that due to a confluence of personal issues and mechanical issues, I haven’t been up to my usual bike commuting percentage this month so far, but the good news is that I am back to the bike commute today, and see no reason I can’t bike in for the remainder of the days I am working this month. Go Loopies!

C squad is 6th overall…just puttin’ that out there. I actually rode the motorcycle to work today, but I picked up Chinese food on the bike to get some points down. I think this competition would be much more interesting in the winter, though, but I would not do well.

Yep. Consularrider and Zanna had some of the highest points totals in the A-Team pre-May so I’m sure all 3 Bike Arlington teams will be back up in the running soon enough. I’m not commuting next week but will try to ride at least a few metres each day just for the 20 base points!
