For the record, I’m all for healthy competition from The Arlington Bees or Cees (where are the cees, by the way?). But will do my best for the A’s.
I also noticed I am five places behind Gary Fisher in the individual standings. THE Gary Fisher. How cool is that?

I don’t know how he is putting up miles since I have his bike.

ParticipantC’mon folks, BikeArlington Team C (for “cyclists”, y’know) has but 4 members – we need 6 more.

I put up 1612 points!I think the points get cleared out once the challenge starts. That’s my guess at least. It does give a good indication of which teams and riders do a lot of miles though.

ParticipantBikeArlington Team C needs just two more people. Every ride day and mile helps a team, so people shouldn’t feel intimidated about signing up for this. Join in the fun! The May 1 starting date is coming up soon. Any warm up mileage before that date gets dropped and everyone starts again at zero.
I think it’s great that all three teams have some strong riders to help inspire the rest of us (at least, right now I do!). And we still have a lot of strong riders around who haven’t signed up yet —
p.s. Just a reminder that no special bike computers, gps systems, apps or software are needed. Signing up and logging miles are very simple. You register first as an individual, then can select a team, or start a new one!

ParticipantI just learned how the point system works:
Challenge points are cumulative throughout the four months of the Challenge and are awarded in the following two ways:
1 Challenge point is awarded for each mile ridden
20 Challenge points are awarded for each day you ride
So one way to earn a lot of points for the teams is just to ride every single day!!! Easy as pie.

ParticipantJust signed on to C team with 449 points (I didn’t track my mileage at all this winter, but now I’ve got my Garmin, so every mile will count from now on). We’ve got some catching up to do!

ParticipantInteresting differentiation between “Cycling, sport” vs “Cycling, transport” – are miles on both counted towards this challenge?
And yeah they will be clearing off all warm-up points before the challenge starts in earnest.

ParticipantAs I understand it, the National Challenge combines both the sport and transport cycling activities, otherwise I wouldn’t be one of the leaders. Not so with the other challenge that is ongoing.

ParticipantHello All — I just had to drop off the Bike Arlington A team, so there is a highly coveted spot available on this elite team. Act fast!
The reason I had to drop off is a good one. Some of you may remember a few months ago that I was unsuccessful in getting my employer to offer Bike Commuter benefits. At the time, I didn’t raise the issue with the other members of my company peleton because most of them were demoralized by an upcoming office move to Rockville that would make bike commuting extremely difficult or impossible for most of them. The National Bike Challenge got me thinking — what if I registered our company and asked the few cyclists I know at work to register (specifying their workplace in the registration), so that at the end of the competition I would have some data to give the company about how many committed cyclists they have on board? I sent an email to 6-10 fellow cyclists, explaining everything I just said, and asking them to forward it to others at the company who cycle.
The response was unexpected. It turns out there are A LOT more cyclists than I realized and so far, a number of them have accepted my invitation. One of my fellow cyclists formed a company team, so I switched over to that team. I don’t think we will be challenging on the team leaderboard (although I do have high hopes for the X-large businesses category), but my goal is bike commuter benefits and a more bike friendly company overall, so hopefully we will be successful in a different competition.
Best wishes to all participants!
Liz
