Start your Pedals, America – The Get Up & Ride

    National Bike Challenge Is On!

New online competition will engage and connect bicyclists from coast to coast.

Washington, D.C. – March 21, 2012 – Launched today by a powerful alliance of the Kimberly-Clark Corporation, the League of American Bicyclists, Bikes Belong and Endomondo, the National Bike Challenge aims to inspire and empower millions of Americans to ride their bikes for transportation, recreation and better health.

The Challenge is simple: Sign up as an individual or as a team, log your miles, share your stories and encourage others to join you. Riders will compete for prizes and awards on the local and national level, including a Grand Prize trip through California wine country from Trek Travel. Already, organizations in 26 states have committed to participate and have started warming up for the May 1 start date on the Challenge website: nationalbikechallenge.org.

“The League is excited about this unique opportunity to share the many benefits of bicycling and offer a fun, engaging entry point for new riders,” said Andy Clarke, President of the League of American Bicyclists. “There’s nothing like riding a bike with your friends and colleagues and the National Bike Challenge will create a new social network of cyclists stretching from coast to coast.”

The online initiative was piloted by Kimberly-Clark (K-C), Endomondo and the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin in 2011. The idea was sparked by K-C research engineer, Rob Gusky, and Kimberly-Clark extended the competition to its 57,000 global employees. The Challenge proved to be a great team building and wellness activity for K-C’s sustainability efforts globally. Participating K-C employees logged 357,739 miles globally, with U.S. employees pedaling 182,210 miles. The success in Wisconsin led to a bigger vision: Taking the challenge to the national level.

“We’re pleased to be the national sponsor of the Challenge as it supports the wellness of our employees and the communities we serve, while contributing to improved air quality by replacing car travel with clean, healthy bicycle trips,” said Jan Spencer, K-C’s senior vice president of continuous improvement/procurement/ sustainability. “This year, K-C is providing an extra incentive for our global team members: The Kimberly-Clark Foundation will donate 10 cents to the League of American Bicyclists for every mile logged by a K-C employee during the 2012 Challenge.”

The platform for the National Bike Challenge was created by Endomondo, a social fitness network with 7.5 million users worldwide. “Riding a bike for transportation is among the top five activities for our European users, and we look forward to helping expand this kind of biking in the U.S. with this campaign,” said Mette Lykke, Co-Founder of Endomondo. “Logging your miles is easy and the social interaction with co-workers, family and friends really makes it fun and motivating to get up and ride.”

“Bikes Belong is delighted to be a part of the National Bike Challenge, which provides all the tools to help more people ride bikes more often,” said Bruno Maier, vice president of Bikes Belong. “We’re looking forward to seeing all the different types of riders who participate. The Challenge is a great way to encourage people to live healthier lives.”

The Challenge runs from May 1 to August 31, 2012, but the public is invited to sign up now and get warmed up. For more information, visit http://www.nationalbikechallenge.org. Join us at facebook.com/nationalbikechallenge.

I second that! The A Team is now ahead of the B Team (update: that was for June only, and for just a little while this morning) and all the teams are doing well. Great efforts, everyone. I probably won’t be biking next week because of a business trip :-( but I hope everyone has a great week! Go Killer Bees!

As Megabeth suggests below, you have to look at the national leaderboard to get the real rankings. The local one is meaningless because of the way they split up the teams.

Looking at the national leaderboard I’m seeing The Killer B’s are 8th for the entire period and 13th just looking at June. I’m seeing the A-Team at 15th, C-Team is 38th. (Not a bad showing considering there are 2507 total teams!)

I think when we look “locally” we all see different people making up the teams based on where our profiles are set. For example, when I pull up using the local screen, I don’t see Pete either individually or included in the B-Team because he’s rounded into another area/zip code…and, Pete’s our Killer Bee King!

The Bike Challenge is changing some of my riding habits. Prior to this, all my rides were commutes or workouts. Now I take my bike out for leisurely rides on off days to get the 20 points. I never used to do that. It’s been fun. Next thing you know I’ll be running errands on my bike instead of my car!! :)

Pete should be in the DC Metro Statistical Area as it runs to West Virginia (see link below)

Unclear what is going on but BikeArlington is clearly kicking some bicycle butt.

If we took the competition as seriously as our cycling, a BikeArlington all-star team would likely be close to first. I like the casual Arlington way better

After an easy week of short daily rides (15-30 min. of easy pedaling and coasting), I’m hoping to start cranking it up, starting today. I’ll try to ride for a few hours today. Then I’ll ride for at least an hour a day, with one weekly ride being close to 2 hrs. and another close to 4 hrs. (or 5). I’ll do that for a couple weeks. Then I’ll back off again as I start to focus more on speed workouts instead of volume for the rest of the summer.

Some of those easy rides will be on CaBi though. So while I might ride for 60 min. (two separate 30-min. rides), I probably won’t rack up that many miles on the CaBi bikes. Kind of hard to break the 10 mph barrier on CaBi.

I pointed that out to support, they said it was fixed, but it doesn’t appear to be. I show up on my own screen. I can now see everyone on my team too. I couldn’t before.

It is pretty dang cool how well the Arlington folks are doing. :D Keep it up!!!

Local Team Standings…. based on their national scores (you have to look at the National Screen in order to see all the local riders – otherwise NBC in its infinite wisdom splits the city into VA, MD and probably some more – and your LOCAL screen will only show riders from that jurisdiction). I know I am probably missing some teams.

NB: Team Federal Cyclists Commission is trouncing Team AT&T 😎

I live in VA. When I check the local leaderboard, Oxon Hill Team 3 and Team 4 show up, but not Team 1 or Team 2. NIH and US DOT appear on the list too, but not Bike Rack DC.

If you ever find yourself at the Wyndham Hotel in Jacksonville, FL, please say hi to Dee, a delightful employee there who helped me keep accruing points for the BikeArlington B Team.

Dee overheard me mentioning that it would be really cool if all hotels had rental bikes, and generously offered to let me rent hers for my entire stay. We cut a very reasonable deal, and I had a blast exploring the area on her Freespirit Outrage, which came complete with a lock, horn and light, and included delivery and pickup. Dee, you are awesome – thanks so much! Please enjoy your BikeArlington reflective band, which I’m glad I happened to have with me in my backpack. I feel better knowing that you’ll have something more than just your rear reflector and taped-on booklight to help keep you safe when you ride at night.

That turned out wonderfully, Arlingtonrider! I have to go to Orlando in July for a conference for five days and I searched the hotel’s website for info on rental or loaner bikes, but the situation looks hopeless. Maybe I just need to find a friendly employee to help me out!

Orlando has some nice off-street paths but I would hate to see you (or anyone else I like) mixing it up in traffic down there. It’s terrifying. Stay safe!

Right — it’s a huge resort (or so it appears from the website), so I was hoping there would be some trails I could ride around on without even going out into the larger world. As a side note, I took my son to Walt Disney World late last summer and was impressed with the wide roads throughout the Disney property (which was as big as some small cities I’ve been to). Though traffic moved fast, it was somewhat sparse when we were there, so cycling through would have been doable. Nonetheless, I only saw a couple people cycling while there. They may have been employees, because there really isn’t anywhere to go around there besides the parks and hotels. It makes sense that they don’t have any infrastructure — I’m sure the only people interested would be a tiny percentage of their employees and diehard fitness fanatics because not many people want to exercise while on vacation (aside from wandering from Space Mountain to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad).

But they will probably be keeping me too busy to think of recreation. Plus it will be hot. Oh well.

    Liz
