Coming off the 14th street bridge from Virginia to the Jefferson memorial sidewalk heading towards downtown – it seems almost everyone scoots in the street to the first south facing curb cut, rather than try to make one of the 90 degree right turns instead. Even though thats actually a south bound lane. Usually not much traffic there by the Memorial, at least in the AM. But it still makes me nervous.

Has this been discussed? I assume no NPS plans for a fix.

I only salmon there when the NPS cars or the cones block the sidewalk. Last week I was so ticked about the cone blocking the sidewalk AGAIN that I got off my bike and moved it. It was in the dead middle of the sidewalk ramp–blocking cyclists, wheelchairs, or strollers. DUMB DUMB DUMB.

Going home (DC to VA) I actually tend to keep on the sidewalk through this area too (I cut in around the Washington Monument). I just got sick of cars passing me with 4 inches of space, or honking at me for being on the street. The sidewalk is usually much more peaceful on this stretch.

Just to be clear I usually use the crosswalk to the sidewalk, but as I have gotten faster lately I have salmoned here a couple of times. I do appreciate the feedback on the safety concerns. And yes, they could just modify the curb cuts and it would be much better.

Just today, I saw a fool salmon the WHOLE WAY up East Basin then onto Ohio to get to Hains Point. Really?

It is amazing how there is a car or van always parked right there at the turn. I assume this is an anti-salmon strategy on the part of NPS.

No, but I like her style. :) And I also love when cyclists make it on Google Street View. Somewhere I saw a thread (probably Crazy Guy on a Bike) that was devoted to sharing street view pics of touring cyclists. It was awesome! :D

The Bing truck passed me at Memorial Circle yesterday. Look for me (sorry, it means you have to use Bing).

    Wait, Bing still exists?

Yep – just look it up on Google and you’ll find it.

Good question. You should Google it.

    Bing. What’s that?! LOL

I saw the Bing car going through the parking lot at the Giant on South Glebe last weekend. There must be a whole crew of them here.

Edit: Wish the threads would somehow live update while replying. I got distracted by work for two minutes only to find that I’ve been beaten to the punchlines. That said, in this case they are VERY obvious punchlines.

While commuting into town, I try to avoid the whole salmon maneuver and the sidewalks near the Jefferson Memorial. Sometimes I don’t go this way and like the above posted, am ashamed when I do not. It is not too long and somebody even made it a Strava segment. Plus it gives me a chance to see Hanes Points riders and pass them on full time trail bikes on my fendered commuter. http://www.strava.com/segments/6978169?filter=overall

I once watched someone open up Bing and do a search for Google Maps.

Reminds me of Internet Explorer on a clean install of Windows. It’s only good for downloading Chrome and Firefox. :D

Actually, it’s only good for going to the website of your favorite Linux distro and finding the URL for the right torrent download.

Only if you’re setting up a dual boot system. Otherwise, skip the clean install of Windows altogether and just install Linux.

Well, sure, but it can be really hard to buy a computer without Windows already installed. And I don’t like dual boot, VMWare is free.
