ParticipantI mostly ride in VA and DC, but I can be fully decked out in my Terps gear to win the most Maryland-looking person. I think you should issue a challenge to everyone to go do Savage Mountain’s wall and then whomever posts the best time, wins.

In keeping with Freezing Saddles, I think that ride should be set for a day with freezing rain or snow. :p

ParticipantBe the first to complete an homage to the history of the Old Line State.
examples could include:Star Spangled Pannier: Ride from the site of F.Scott Key’s house (Georgetown) to Baltomore Harbor where Key was held captive by the brits, and penned our national anthem.
or. . .
The Roof is on Fire: Re-enact the Limey’s win at the Battle of Bladensburg and invastion of the district by Riding from Bladensburg, MD, to the Navy Yard, and then on to the white house (actual flames are not recommended).
or . . .
Get off my land!: Ponder the present shape of Maryland (as the leftover pieces that VA (and WV), PA, and DE didn’t want) by posting rides in each of these 4 states.
or . . .February 4, 2014 at 4:14 pm #992876dasgeh
ParticipantAnd/or the next Team Challenge could be Civil War related. Like visiting as many forts as possible.

. . .Does my February 1st ride count? However, I probably didn’t get close enought to were he was a captive. If only you’d posted this on Friday. So close.

or . . .The Key ride could be even more fun if you added in his hometown out in Carroll County!

Or we (VA vs MD) could try to ride each other into the ditch (completely by accident of course), during our random sightings, which ever side has the most people from the other side in the ditch “wins”!
Ok maybe not.

Excellent use of the “participation matters” scoring system.

Maryland, USA (give or take six miles)****Announcing a new, Maryland-centric Pointless Prize! ****
****Team and Individual Prizes to be Awarded!****
This prize challenges you to ride on as many unique Maryland mixed use trails or rail trails for the duration of the Freezing Saddles competition period (yes, you can count rides going back to 1/1/14). Prizes will be awarded for the individual who rides on the most trails and for the team that collectively rides on the most different trails. For the team competition, there is no limit to the number of trails any individual can contribute, but each trail only counts once.
Paved, gravel and hard packed trails are okay but mountain bike trails are excluded — e.g.:
C&O: Yes
Northwest Branch Trail: Yes
Torrey C. Brown Trail: Yes
Rosaryville: NoPrize is TBD — could be a contribution in your name to the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. If I can get them to provide some without thinking I’m crazy, maybe I can also award some RTC socks or something to the winners.
To be consired for an individual prize, near the end of the competition period, post a message here identifying the trails you have ridden on. To be considered for a team prize, have one team member post a message here identifying the trails your team has ridden on. You will be on the honor system; no proof is required although trail reviews are VERY welcome and may be rewarded.
(Yes, this is a self-serving competition. My love for rail trails is well known and I’m always looking for new ones to check out).
Enjoy! Also, don’t make me award this to my own captain.

There has to be a more insulting way to describe the “most Maryland-looking person”…

Then the GAP from Cumberland to the Mason Dixon Line, surely, should count too.
