The laws are confusing on this issue since once a cyclist enters a crosswalk he or she is considered to be a pedestrian and we do not post stop signs for peds. That said, I still think the stop signs on trails are a good idea to alert cyclists that they need to slow down for an upcoming road.

Yes, the driver was being a doofus for not paying attention to the road!

I agree with this. However, if we want cyclists to slow down (appropriately, in my opinion) and yield to crossing traffic, a yield sign would be preferable.

I thought there had been a report that these stop signs at intersections controlled by traffic lights were to be removed. Having a walk light and a green light makes the stop sign contradictory.

Agreed. Posting a plenitude of superfluous stops signs is an excellent way to train cyclists to simply ignore the signs. Want cyclists to stop at a stop sign? Only post them where they are needed – and not at every corner.

I just liked that you used the word “plenitude.”

Exactly. Just toss up some signs the way the cycletracks have them for bikes to cross with the light or with crosswalk. Seems simple enough to me.

I also take issue with the stop sign at the National Airport on the MVT. Make it one or the other as motorists are so confused by the yield to pedestrians that they stop. I swear, every time I meet someone there, 75% of the time they are going fast enough for me to slow down and then they motion for me to go. I appreciate the motion to go, but by that point it’s useless and may as well be one or the other.
