ParticipantI went back to Astro Doughnuts on 18 January, but am only now catching up on all of my social media (darn work getting in the way of important things!). From this photo, I sampled 3 doughnuts. In the top left corner, peanut butter and jelly; next to it, lime mojito; and underneath that one, German chocolate cake.
The PB&J one was pretty awesome in that it was jelly filled, but still in that lovely toroidal shape. For me, that means just the right amount of filling. It was well-balanced, and I’m sure that the peanut butter gave me some nice fuel for bike-riding.
The lime mojito had what I thought was a surprisingly – and welcome – sour lime flavor for such a sweet setting. Good for those who don’t want their entire experience to be sweet-sweet-sweet.
I adored the German chocolate one because, once again, I thought it was well-balanced. This time, it was balanced between a cake portion that was relatively non-sweet and a wonderful coconutty frosting. Much like my favorite cookies (frosted sugar cookies), it was a ying-yang of sweet and non-sweet. Reminds me of the best German chocolate cakes that I have tasted.

My fourth submission relies upon the sweet generosity of our judge. Check out the pear frangipane that I had at the Board and Brew this morning! Frangipanes have an almond paste (like marzipan), upon which are layered delectable fruits coated in a lovely glaze. And the phyllo-pastry base? So light, so airy. Everyone should go out and add this offering to their experience!

ParticipantI tried to stop at Tasty Donuts this morning, but they are closed on weekends and had to settle for a chocolate dipped donut and a chocolate frosted donut at the MPS Bäckerei & Cafe at Marbachweg and Hansaallee. There were three types of yeast donuts to choose from as well as the one dipped.

ParticipantStopped by La Colombe in Blagden Alley to refuel and saw something that looked like a donut. Turned out that it’s a pastry called Kouign Amman. Sort of like a croissant with crusty flakes on the outside and a puff pastry interior. This particular one was filled with a cranberry cream. So not exactly a donut but I would submit a worthy consideration!

ParticipantThe Wawa (Beltsville) experience… it may seem like I’m going for the sorriest doughnut, but honestly what I had wasn’t all that bad. The case was mostly empty when I got there at 9:30am, but lo – I beheld an interesting white and pink striped confection and decided to give it a try. White chocolate raspberry. I don’t know where they get their doughnuts from, and I can only image the artificial flavorings and colors that might be present, but it wasn’t half bad. A raspberry-flavored cake doughnut with a heavier white chocolate icing. Not too cloying – which is what I expected. It would have gone better with a nice cup of hot tea, but I’d eat it again.

ParticipantMy first visit to District Doughnuts and towards our FS mixed group ride. I had the dark chocolate orange cream along with a peppermint chocolate one. Truth told, I ate both so fast all I can say they were both great, slight edge to the dark chocolate orange.

ParticipantInfiltrated the dinosaurs and doughnuts ride today which included a District Doughnuts stop on 8th St SE. Second visit but I had to get one of those creme broule doughnuts after David posted one. So yummy and warm and it was awesome to see someone blowtorch a doughnut. I also got a Chocolate Orange Creme.
This ride was interesting. I got hit by a car on the way to the start of the ride. The group was kind enough to wait for me while the ambulance came and the police report was filed.
Not wanting to pass up the doughnut goodness, I continued on the ride to Bladensburg and back.

ParticipantDoughneuring #3 on today’s ride in Babenhasen at Bäckerei Konditorei und Cafe Lautenschläger. A “Happy” Donut, one of only two choices, the other being powered sugar.

ParticipantBeen meaning to hit Duck Donuts for a while and finally made it to the one in Arlington. Their donuts are fresh off the conveyor so you have to wait a bit for them to put on the toppings. You can make your own combinations but I went with a couple of the suggested ones: the blueberry with powdered sugar and vanilla, oreo, and hot fudge drizzle. The donut itself reminded me of those old fashioned donuts like the apple donuts that you get in Shenandoah. Both were tasty, particularly the oreo with the warm fudge. They definitely warmed me up for the ride home!

ParticipantTivoli bakery in Ballston. Don’t know what this thing was, but I didn’t finish it. It was some sort of “custard” filled “chocolate” glazed monstrosity. At least I was incentivized to eat my cereal instead. :p

Well, that donut was certainly happy to see something.
I thought this was a “family” forum?

ParticipantSadly, District Donuts on 8th St SE ran out of donuts by the time we arrived yesterday afternoon, so we had to settle for Dunkin’ Donuts down the street. The heart donut with chocolate icing and filling was acceptable but nothing special.

Was the doughnut nose made of doughnut?

Nope, it was some sort of thick cream with a firmer bottom layer.
