This donut ride sounds totally fun….thanks for organizing! I just want to make sure we know where to find you…I see it’s at 9 a.m. at 202 Donuts, 4901 Fairmont Ave. in Bethesda.
For those of us who view Maryland as a foreign country, can someone explain exactly where this is? If we ride up the Crescent Trail, where do we get off and how do we locate the 202 Donuts place?
Thanks!!! w&wHere’s a map.
The thin blue line is the CCT. The heavy blue line is the route from the CCT to 202 Donuts
The red circled section is where you ride against traffic on the sidewalk.Alternatively, you can turn left as you exit the trail on Bethesda Ave. & turn right on Arlington Road. Bear slightly right at the light at Old Georgetown (changes names to St. Elmo’s) and then right at Fairmont. This is the way I would go, shown in green.

ParticipantI endorse the Arlington Road option. The traffic is worse, mind the crossings! My WABA Montgomery County Advocacy Committee has been working to get this route made into a protected lane for bike, using a road diet, as the natural way a cyclist would want to get to 202 or to the Trolley Trail. The County accepted the concept and penciled it into the Master Plan, with committing to build it anytime soon.

ParticipantI’m in and am planning to meet you at 202! I’m coming in from Fairfax so if anyone wants to caravan from along the WOD/Custis/CCT corridor, lmk. Kate, I’ll PM you my cell in case I’m running late so I’ll know where to meet you, though if I miss you at 202, I expect I’ll see the group headed south on the CCT.
Sounds like a ton of fun, thanks for organizing!

ParticipantDoughneurers!
Not all doughnuts are sweet confections. Some are a bit cross-over, like Maple Bacon, but for the true Doughneuer, there are true savory doughnuts.
This week’s challenge is to indulge in one! Luckily for all of you joining in the Great Extravaganza tomorrow, Astro Doughnuts (coincidence that we will be there around lunch time??) offers a magnificent savory doughnut sandwich selection.
Known secondarily for their fried chicken, Astro’s offers several Chicken doughnut sandwiches.
Old Bay Chicken on a doughnuts? Buffalo Chicken doughnut sandwich? If you dare and eat meat, take the savory challenge!
See you all on Saturday! This will be epic. e

ParticipantToday’s doughnut rendez-vous was a feat of derring do. I went to Laurel. It’s not too pretty trying to get to Laurel. Especially on the return trip home as I decided that traffic was just a little too aggressive to stay on the road (MD-197) and I relegated myself to the sidewalk I thought… could this be a level of the Underworld in Dante’s Inferno???
The goal was a worthy one, however. Montgomery County residents might remember a Dutch Country Market – with its Amish workforce and delicacies galore… it moved to PG County about a decade ago (haha!). One of the sections is a bakery, where you can watch and smell doughnuts being freshly prepared all day long. Don’t try going here on a Sunday, though – the place is only open Thursdays through Saturdays, with some different days around holidays.
Just so you know, I’m not a huge fan of bacon on doughnuts, even though I love bacon. However, I would eat this maple bacon doughnut again. What made it so tasty? Hmm.. the texture of the doughnut, the richness of the maple and chocolate frostings… and they candied the bacon perfectly. Yes. Candied bacon. They did it right!

ParticipantTiming of the caravan is a wild guess, but here goes:
9:00. 202 Donuts, depart by 9:25
10:30 District Donuts in Cady’s Alley, Georgetown departing by 11:00
11:30 a 11:40. Sugar Shack, Glebe Rd, Arlington
12:30 wild guess that we will be in route or at Astro Doughnuts on G Street NW somewhere around 12:30 – 1:00. Departing by 1:something…
Timing really falls apart by now, depends on how many people are in the group, ordering sandwiches, pace of the group…
But
Pedaling across town and heading up the ART between 1:30 and 2:15, getting to Dunkin in Hyattsville around 2:30 unless we amaze ourselves and get there by 2…
45 minutes around to Silver Spring, at Tiramisu in the 3:00 range??
Finish back in Bethesda, top of the CCT at whenever…Kate

ParticipantI unexpectedly had some free time this morning and so was able to join the first three stops of the Doughneuring ride. Thanks to Edelweiss for organizing this excellent event!
Stop 1: 202 Donuts. I didn’t buy a donut* but Wheels&Wings was good enough to give me a taste of hers. Despite the fact that their web site hails their “artisanal donuts”, W&W and I agreed that this was a disappointing, soggy product.
Stop 2: District Doughnut’s web site says they offer a “culinary sensation” and seek “to reimagine the concept of a doughnut* – an American classic – and bring it to life in a modern form.” My maple butter pecan doughnut (pictured below) was pretty tasty, but still, it was easy to set half of it aside.

Stop 3: Sugar Shack: Sugar Shack’s web site is refreshingly free of hipster-lingo self-aggrandizement, saying only that, “our donuts* and coffee are made the right way.” And their donuts were my favorite. Picutred below is a chocolate glazed number. I also enjoyed their blueberry cake donut.

*For each shop I spell donut/doughnut the way that they do.

Kate,
Thanks so much for setting this up and giving our team, The Fourmidable Snow Flakes, a chance to meet our Freezing Saddles archnemeses.
They’re nowhere near as dastardly as I had built them up in my mind. In fact, they’re downright likable, but maybe that’s their tactic to make us like them before they try to take us down?
I have discovered that they have a weakness for doughnuts, which we can use for our diabolical plots to win the competition! Following are pix of them that we can use for our planning sessions.

ParticipantFellow doughneurs,
I had a great time today. My mind is too sugar addled to total the number of doughnuts I ate today (I think it was
or to post the pictures. Will try to get them up tomorrow night.

ParticipantSo… while I hadn’t been planning on being able to make it to the great doughneuring ride today, the wheels in my mind kept turning as I imagined the glorious potential. What if I could actually meet up with this huge group of cyclists in pursuit of doughnuts? I mean, going through Hyattsville, they were practically going to be in my back yard. What better opportunity for BAFS participation at its best – socialization, food, and bicycles!
First, though, to fix the flat on my trusty Nona. *sigh*
Then the wheels in my mind kept turning. Doughnut warfare! I could pelt the riders with doughnuts (I mean, toss people doughnuts to help them get extra points)! This required a pannier and a quick stop at my local Dunkin:
That flat, though. I knew that I didn’t have as much time as I was planning. No longer could I count on being able to meet the group at Benning Road. In fact, I knew that I would have to take the quick route to Bladensburg. So I did – every best shortcut that I knew – my scintillating knowledge of this area as a bicyclist – I arrived just north of the Bladensburg Bridge and could just make out a colorful posse of bicyclists on the other side. Text to Mary: I will wait at Shortcake (about 1-2 miles north of my current position). The trap was set. I kept quiet and partially concealed from the bicyclists by the bridge as they crossed the tributary.
Bonus doughneuring pitstop established! People seemed to enjoy the surprise of me standing in their path with some spare munchkins.

From there I joined the crowd. It was great fun.
My “doughnuts” of the day included:
Glazed munchkin from the College Park Dunkin Donuts – I picked up one of these and about 24 siblings as the lightest offering to the anticipated-doughnut-logged riders. About what you would expect. I do like DD’s glaze.
Peanut-encrusted doughnut from the Hyattsville DD – I thought that peanuts would give me some nice protein to the carb-bomb of a doughnut. Nothing extraordinary, but not a disappointment. I like a good nutty doughnut.
Apple danish (special exception given by Edelweiss) at the Tiramisu Bakery in Silver Spring. I love a good apple Danish. This one had a lovely flaky dough and the apples were just what I was looking for.
AND
Some kind of savory fried dough thing, also at the Tiramisu Bakery in Silver Spring. It would have been interesting to warm this up. I still have the rest of the bit. Perhaps I’ll try it later tonight. There wasn’t a huge amount of flavor – I wonder what it’s normally paired with?
Congrats to the group from the ride that I like to call “the Completionists”! In from the start to the end, including whatever commute they had to get to and from the ride. A courageous bunch.
Thanks, Kate!

ParticipantWhat a great ride. Great people, great weather, fun stops, interesting exploring (who would have thought riding on Benning road would have been so enjoyable?)
Now for the donuts.
Doughneuring #2. At Sugar Shack, Arlington.
A piece of a Samoa (girl scout cookie) doughnut. It definitely reminded me of the cookie, and went well with my coffee.
#3 Astro in DC.
I had a Blood Orange donut. The best I’ve had so far, I think.
Also had some of a Raspberry filled donut, but no pic.
Doughneuring # 4 at the Dunkin Donuts on Queenschapel.
Had some of a heart shaped chocolate donut, because Valentines. Awhhh
#5 At the Ethiopian place on Eastern Avenue in Silver Spring. Had some of the traditional fried bread. Very nice change from the sweets.
