ParticipantBikes go on the LPI, including Barnes Dance. Cyclists should go walking speed and yield to pedestrians.

Exactly this. I have one right outside my office. I proceed through the LPI, SLOWLY if there are pedestrians crossing, and always yield right of way to them.
Keep in mind they likely don’t know cyclists have the right to proceed on LPI. I’ve gotten snarky comments from pedestrians and the capitol police on this move even when I’ve been going walking speed and yielding to pedestrians, so you’ll need to politely and kindly educate them if this comes up.

ParticipantHere standard right of way rules should apply: the vehicle (or pedestrian) to the right has the right of way. Just like at a 4-way stop.

Sorry, not a stupid question at all. Leading Pedestrian Interval. It’s when the pedestrians get the walk signal before cars get the green – gives pedestrians (and in DC, cyclists) time to get out in front so they’re visible to turning drivers, etc.

For those of use who spend time both in DC and out virtually every day, this can get confusing if you forget where you are. Cyclists being allowed to go on the LPI is legal in DC, not in Virginia.

True, though I think ACPD agrees that it’s the safer option, so in Arlington, at least, I would not expect enforcement.

I’m having trouble thinking of an intersection in Arlington that has an LPI. I jump the gun at the ones in Alexandria before remembering I’m not in DC frequently.

There’s one at Potomac Ave and Crystal Drive heading into Alexandria I think. I’ve jumped the gun on that one before.

Ahh yes. You’re right. I started to jump that one a week or two ago. I don’t go that way too often these days. I have a list of intersections where I’d love an LPI (truly all of them, but every light on Columbia Pike and all of the intersections crossing the W&OD would be a great start)
Does anyone know if Virginia municipalities can allow bikes to go on the LPI or is state legislation required?

There’s a couple – Walter Reed & 4MR have an LPI for example. I can’t remember the others I have seen. But I customarily advance with them when I’m on bike & hadn’t thought anything of it – it seemed like the safest & appropriate thing to do!

ParticipantIOD is technically just a long LPI. So it must be legal in Virginia for bikes in the crosswalk to proceed on an LPI, but not bicycles in the street? We should get it legalized for street riders too.
At IOD westbound, if I am intending to take a left on Ft Myer Drive, I will sometimes walk south into the crosswalk while Lynn has the green, position myself in front of the left lane of the I-66 exit, then start riding on the LPI. By doing so, I eliminate both the conflict with drivers violating the temporary no-turn-on-red arrow as well as the conflict of turning across oncoming Custis Trail users. Plus I reach the intersection at Fort Myer and Lee long before any vehicles get close. I suppose I could legally go a bit further to the southern crosswalk across Lynn instead, but that’s less efficient and should be unnecessary.

I’m going to fight you over there being an LPI at Walter Reed and 4MR. Dukes up!
