ParticipantDoesn’t seem like that many choices. I mean, there’s only like two century rides available every weekend.

ParticipantAlright, if you were a ultra heavy rider (350lbs) that struggles with big hills but can keep a decent pace otherwise (think ~15mph) which of these would you recommend? I could definitely do a metric century and, if the hills are rolling and not long climbs, an actual century. The Silo (metric) Century looks pretty much perfect but I’m curious if there are any others you’d suggest based on experience.

Seagull is perfectly flat.

It can be windy, too. If you’re comfortable in a pace line, Seagull is a breeze!
Pun intended.

Back Roads is pretty flat…or I guess I should say that the roads in the Berryville area are pretty flat (I haven’t actually done Back Roads) with some nice rollers to keep your butt from getting sore. I’d wager that the century can’t be much more than about 2k feet of climbing based on the couple rides I’ve done up in that general area. I did the CASA century last year, which is essentially the same terrain, just north a few miles in WV, and it was like 2400 feet of climbing, and the wife and I did 45 miles in Berryville a couple weeks ago and I think it was maybe 1200 feet of climbing.

Backroads for me was about 2300k ft of climbing. All rolling but it adds up.
http://www.strava.com/activities/9832665I have not done it but I’d do Seagull if I didn’t want any climbing, and were ok with potentially windy conditions. I would guess most people riding it would average > 15mph though so it might be hard to find a decent paceline to hide from the wind.

ParticipantBoo, can’t do the Seagull due to some work nonsense. Anyone here done the Tour du Port in Baltimore?

ParticipantThe Kid and I are going to do the 43 m route of the Great Pumpkin Ride. Not too much information from the website but there are some good blog reviews. Here is a 2011 map.
We may also do the Rappahannock Rough Ride, even in spite of MB’s old blog review. Prob the 33 m route.

ParticipantThe Great Pumpkin Ride is a lot of fun. I first heard of it through my family doctor. He’s not a hard-core rider at all.
What I did last year was to start in Marshall, ride to the ride, and then back at the end so I could round it out to a century.

ParticipantI give the Great Pumpkin Ride two thumbs up, I plann to be back for the fourth time this year. We had a true ELITE rider with us last year, Joe Dumbrowski. Just two caveats, be patient at the mass start along the MUP, and the access to the first rest stop at the winery is unpaved. Has great pumpkin themed food at the rest stops (pie at every one!).

ParticipantYeah, the Great Pumpkin Ride looks awesome. the flyer says there are 3, 24, 43 and 71 mile routes.
We’re looking into it. Does anyone have a sense of if/when registration fills up?
Thanks

For the three years I’ve ridden they’ve were able to accommodate day of ride registration. But don’t quote me on that of this year. Note that the flier does include a higher fee for day of ride registration.

ParticipantBy the way, the Kidical Mass Arlington Harvest Ride is THIS SUNDAY, Sept. 15, 2013 at 10:30am leaving from Alcova Heights Park. You should come.
In case you were wondering.

Thanks – I saw the thread, but I have family visiting so I can’t commit to it yet. I definitely need to make one of these rides though!
