ParticipantI didn’t check the temp before I went out – only a 4 mile commute today so wore 2 wool layers under my gridlock jacket, 2 buffs, liners under my inferno gloves, and long johns under my jeans (nothing more than usual for this winter). Didn’t realize how cold it was till Ben came in with ice hanging from his beard telling me it was 18 when he left his house. Glad I didn’t know!

Yea, tailwinds are awesome, and so much warmer. I also have said this before, but I have found that one thing I love about bar-end shifters is the ability to wear real winter ski gloves, because dexterity isn’t so important. They keep my hands nice and warm, so much better than my winter cycling gloves.
Oh, and in the theme of the thread……the best part was how it woke me up.
went to electronic shifting this fall. Tried my full on polar winter ski mits and was pleasantly surprised to find I can brake and shift just fine. Cold fingers are a thing of the past.

ParticipantI used my light REI lobster gloves (usually good for 30-35F) inside Bar Mitts and Lake Boots with a liner sock, chemical toe warmers and a Woolie Boolie sock. Felt great for the ride in. No chemical toe warmers for the ride home.

It felt worse than today than since the polar vortex nonsense to me. Probably because I was riding into the wind. But my fingers were so cold (stupid hand warmer doesn’t do justice down the fingertips (i need the lobster claw gloves) that I stopped at the Washington Monument bathroom to warm up for 5 minutes before finishing the last 2 miles of the ride. I bet the winds will change direction tonight.
The Washington Monument bathroom has been a miracle worker on some of my very very late night sub-freezing rides home from DC socializing. Even when the Park Police busted me for using it after it was technically closed. “No, officer, there’s no one else in here except for me…and my bike.” I guess their concerned about illicit activities…
Favorite part of my commute tonight was getting home, peeling off the layers directly into the washer and putting on the fuzzy bathrobe. Also: leftover pizza.

ParticipantI rode out to Vienna this morning after it had warmed into the low 20’s (I think), and rode home in the high 20’s in the snow. Both rides were beautiful, and I was warm and comfortable the whole way, but the snow ride is the winner: quiet, gorgeous, and not slippery at all (at 8:00 pm). The only problem I had was the jagged, icy daggers tearing into my eyeballs the whole way…but it was worth it. I put in an extra two miles because I just couldn’t help myself! I wish I could have done more.

Not for very very late nights, but the Kennedy Center is a great pit stop for those in need on the way from DC to VA.

ParticipantThat reminds me. I was out on a ride Sunday afternoon on the MVT and passed a woman cycling by with her parakeet. In its cage, in her front basket I believe. Had to double take.
