ParticipantAgreed: except I put my toe warmers on my thumbs, the only part of my body that was numb.

Participantwas having done it knowing that tomorrow I will be stuck in the house with teenagers.
Dang that was cold.

ParticipantDidn’t seem particularly bad coming in from the northeast (downwind). I’ll pay going back home tonight as the storm ramps up with NNE winds.

Yeah, I’m not sure if it was the wind, my knowledge of the impending storm, or simply that I thinned my blood last night with whisky at the Sharon Jones concert… regardless, I was bloody freezing this morning!

ParticipantIt felt worse than today than since the polar vortex nonsense to me. Probably because I was riding into the wind. But my fingers were so cold (stupid hand warmer doesn’t do justice down the fingertips (i need the lobster claw gloves) that I stopped at the Washington Monument bathroom to warm up for 5 minutes before finishing the last 2 miles of the ride. I bet the winds will change direction tonight.

ParticipantYea, tailwinds are awesome, and so much warmer. I also have said this before, but I have found that one thing I love about bar-end shifters is the ability to wear real winter ski gloves, because dexterity isn’t so important. They keep my hands nice and warm, so much better than my winter cycling gloves.
Oh, and in the theme of the thread……the best part was how it woke me up.

Steve, were you on the WOD this morning? I spotted someone wearing full red ski gloves… in fact they looked like Dragster racing gloves from a distance…. I was a little jealous!

ParticipantWas seeing a gorgeous blue heron (or crane of some sort) at TR Island, and then, when I turned around to get a better look at the bird, getting to ride and chat with rcannon for a while.
I was hot. I
overdressing.

ParticipantI overdressed the heck out of my hands and I don’t regret it. Merino glove liners, my regular winter gloves, and freshly re-sewn Moose Mitts. My hands were nice and toasty warm, even when I pulled them out of the Mitts to thank the nice bus driver who actually checked his blind spot before entering the bike lane, and the right-turning car at Thomas Circle who actually yielded to me and the other cyclist in front of me.
My feet were another story. I need Moose Mitts for my pedals.

ParticipantWas actually getting to ride part of it. Still no changing facilities access, so I rode from the pentagon in my suit.

Brrrr … I hope you were adequately layered up either under or over it!

Did you take the 17 from braddock/wakefield chapel? I was wondering if they had bike racks on front or not.

Yes, they do. 29x from Braeburn works too.

Nope, not me! I roll down Fairfax-Wilson-Iwo Jima-DC.

I’ve thought the same thing – although thick hiking wool socks have been working on shorter rides for me lately. I also go with liner/thin gloves, under thick gloves, under Moose Mitts. Usually overkill and not great dexterity but I’d rather go overboard – it’s easy to stash some extra gloves in my jacket pockets. Often I end up with just thinner gloves under Moose Mitts and that works down into the mid 30s.
