ParticipantHere’s a pre-Thanksgiving event:
Bike to the Beach is proud to host its Second Annual Cranksgiving, a charity food drive and autism awareness ride to promote cycling, community involvement, autism awareness, and hunger awareness in Washington, DC. We are excited to partner with Miriam’s Kitchen to bring high-quality meals made daily with fresh ingredients to those in-need.
Join us by registering for Cranksgiving, Washington, DC!
ABOUT
Cranksgiving is a food drive on two wheels. Our version is part bike ride, part autism awareness ride, part food drive, part scavenger hunt. The original Cranksgiving has been held annually in New York City since 1999, and Bike to the Beach is hosting it in Washington, DC to promote cycling, raise autism awareness, and support Miriam’s Kitchen.Bring a bike, a bag, a lock, and about $20-$30.00 to buy food and supplies. All of the food and items collected at local stores will be donated to Miriam’s Kitchen, a non-profit organization that serves the homeless via a breakfast program, case management, and transitional housing and after-breakfast programs.

More details are available on the website: http://www.biketothebeach.org/site/c.duIVJdNXKkL2G/b.8854823/k.6F7B/Cranksgiving_Food_Drive.htmCranksgiving involves bikes, a food drive and Thanksgiving. Some will race it, but most will probably just be there to ride around and enjoy the event. If I’m able to participate, that’s what I’ll do. (My quads are still bothering me. I’ll probably be able to ride, but I’m not going to push it at all. I will avoid hills as much as I can, even short ones, because those bother my quads more than flat riding does. I’ll probably stay around 10-12 mph most of the time, when I’m not coasting.)
I just heard about the event this week. One detail of note: Some of the people from NBC’s Today Show and from NBC Washington will be participating, in D.C. and in other cities across the U.S. In D.C., Al Roker, Savannah Guthrie, Peter Alexander, Angie Goff and Tom Kierein will be participating.

NBC4 taped a segment about cycling in Arlington back in July. (I missed that because I somehow overlooked that thread.)

I’d like to do a long ride on the Wednesday morning before T-day (~50 miles. I’m planning to leave Reston, head to HDCC, then ? Probably green lizard and Old Ox and return home. Anyone care to join?
On Saturday after thanksgiving the wife and I will like head to cafe amori or green lizard around 11/12 and we’d be happy to meet up with forum members at either location. Any takers?
I’ll meet you at HDCC and then join you for the ride west. I may be up for the Saturday ride as well.
Ok, and I signed up for tomorrow’s Cranksgiving food drive ride as well.

ParticipantIf I bring the Kid’s plastic bike, maybe I can suck onto Counselor’s wheel and keep up with you half the way.

At the start of the Cranksgiving scavenger hunt. Peter Alexander, Savannah Guthrie and Al Roker of the Today show are listening to the event organizer. Angie Goff, Tom Kierein and Melissa Mollet of NBC4 are just behind them. This was next to the Georgetown Waterfront Park.

ParticipantI’ll definitely see you all at HDCC, and then maybe again on Saturday in Vienna or Herndon, depending on other plans and weather.
I hope everyone can get out and enjoy the nice weather tomorrow!

ParticipantAnother good event is the Phoenix Bikes Thanksgiving dinner tuesday evening for volunteers, staff, family and supporters. Come celebrate the season of gravy by bringing a stuffed chocolate cake! There is a Sign Up Genius page where you can volunteer to bring cranberries or stuffing.

I’m riding to work on Thanksgiving morning, and could meet people at VTCC, but I doubt the place will be open. If anyone knows different, let me know…

ParticipantOk, I mounted the studded tires on my spare wheelset last night just in case. Anyone want to head west on the W&OD around noon and get an ice bike ride in?
