Well, given that I already have two Garmins running simultaneously (the Edge 500 and the Vivoactive HR), I don’t think I need a third. The Vivoactive runs for several days on a single charge, so recharging while riding is not actually an issue for me. [emoji6]
N+1 applies to computers, too

This has the proper cable so that you can record and charge at the same time. Comes highly recommended from years of personal experience.

It looks as if the Edge 500 needs a 47K 5% tolerance resistor, but other Garmin models could possibly need different resistor values. In any case I found this post from a randonneur who shows in photos what to do. Do this modification entirely at your own risk. It isn’t easy. And don’t breathe in the flux vapor if you solder. Shower and wash your hands really well after doing the soldering. After all that is lead solder you are using, yes?

All told, it is easier to just buy a cable that is modded corectly.
Solder is (Pb) not (Pu).
Good hack, thanks. I Have a 500 and plan to make this.

I have a lipstick sized charging device I use on 60+ mile rides to recharge my gps tracker/phone/etc. It’s not heavy and since it’s so small it’s easy to bring. It makes me feel much safer since I know I can recharge my phone in case I get stranded.
It also works great on road trips when your husband somehow takes up EVERY SINGLE POWER OUTLET in the car…
I picked up one of these, now we have multiple charging cables snaking everywhere in the Subaru! (Not sure if links work on the forum, so we’ll see):
Anker 48W 4-Port USB Car Charger, PowerDrive 4 for iPhone 7 / 6s / Plus, iPad Pro / Air 2 / mini, Galaxy S7 / S6 / Edge / Plus, Note 5 / 4, LG, Nexus, HTC and More https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WHXRGL4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_pxoGybYX6XZDR

Many types of solder used for electronics are actually an alloy of lead (symbol Pb) and Zinc (symbol Zn). Some types contain flux in the cores. Lead is a really bad poison when it gets in your body. Do be careful. There are also lead-free solders, but they do need hotter irons and reflow at higher temperatures. I use it where practical since I have a soldering station that is temperature-adjustable, as opposed to a simple Weller brand pen-type, non-adjustable iron.
My personal practice is to avoid inhaling flux and other solder fumes.
I wash my hands, then jump in the shower, then don clean clothes after soldering sessions. It saves me unpleasant medical issues, even if I’m a little weird about washing up.

ParticipantOh, an error on my part: not Zinc (Zn) but Tin (Sn). I mixed them up. The lead (Pb) amounts are quite real, though.
