I promise not to spam you on the forum too much, but here are a few important first steps to take:

    • First things first: Join our team group on Strava! –> https://www.strava.com/clubs/250629. Once we settle on a team name, I’ll update the group accordingly.
    • Speaking of team names: We need one. Reply to this thread with your best ideas.
    • Introduce yourself! Reply to this thread with a quick intro, including where in the DMV you live; how many times you’ve participated in Freezing Saddles (a.k.a. BAFS); and whether you have any special BAFS goals this year.

I’ll start: I’ve been biking in DC for almost a decade. I live in Capitol Hill and commute to work by bike every day — usually just over 6 miles round-trip. I try to run most errands by bike and like to get in a longer ride every now and then… assuming my fingers don’t go completely numb. This is my second year in Freezing Saddles, and my BAFS goal for this year is to ride every single day of the competition, no matter what. As of January 20 I’ll be taking a break from full-time employment, which means spending some more quality time with my bike (and putting in more BAFS miles) than I did last year. I also teach spin classes and support WABA’s Women in Bicycles program, because there just aren’t enough ladies on bikes and that makes me sad. :(

FINALLY, chime in with your preferences for team communication. It seems to work best when events are coordinated by cross-posting on the forum and the Strava group. But if people prefer email, I could put an email list together for ease of coordinating happy hours and group rides. Let me know if you have strong feelings — but most important, get out there and RIDE YOUR BIKE! Even 1.1 miles per day helps a ton.

Hi everyone, I’m Sam. I live in Woodridge (Not Woodbridge), in northeast DC. I do some work with WABA’s advocacy committee, as well as some biketivism. I normally commute to and from work every day along with other transport and errands, but health issues are keeping from being on my bike as much as I would like. That said, I rode every day last BAFS, and fully intend to do so again. This is my third time, and my first year my team rocked at capture the flag. It was super fun! So, I encourage everyone to get involved in that.

I’ll use this opportunity to state my strong preference for email over the forum. To me the forum is just one more thing that I have to log in and check every day, whereas email is always getting pushed to my mobile device anyway. Since this thread isn’t very active, i think it’s a good idea to email everyone anyway. BAFS isn’t really fun without the reindeer games, in my opinion!

Hi, Sam! Nice to meet you.

Thanks for weighing in on forum vs. email. Since I don’t have email addresses for any of you, it may be easiest to rely on the Strava group discussion for coordinating HP laps, rides, happy hours, etc. for now. I’ll continue to crosspost team events here, to make sure everyone sees them.

Still happy to get a group email going; you guys could post your email addresses here or send them to me (marissa.newhall@gmail.com).

ditto – this is the first time i’ve logged on here since i signed up for FS. i just joined the strava group. email (eibhis@gmail.com) or setting up a FB group would be my preferences. and i love the team name :)

I live in Anacostia and work downtown, my commute is about 4.5 miles each way. i also teach yoga and do crossfit. i’ve been biking for about two years now.

Noticing the concerns here about not wanting to check the Forum to see if there are new posts. If you would like to be notified by email if something is posted on this thread, rather than checking it occasionally, do this:

    1) At the top of this page press the “Thread Tools” button
    2) On the drop down menu, press “Subscribe to the Thread”
    3) There is a drop down menu next to “Notification” that allows you to get an email notification of a new post either instantly, daily or weekly

If you organize activities for which you don’t mind infiltrators, please post them to the FS Official-ish Calendar, which can always be viewed on the Freezing Saddles web site.
