Say…. just say….. you were to join a team. But you are Cat 5 and when you race (8 am) most of your team is still snoozing and useless. And assume you drank BA’s koolaid and you dont have a car. Beside Tim and Pete’s most obvious answer, how would you get there??
Zipcar? Car2Go? Car rental? Significant other? Co-worker? Forum friend?
Bob, if you’re racing, maybe I’ll sign up for the 5’s too and we can carpool together?

ParticipantYOU SANDBAGGER!
Yeah, Zipcar is an option – and I am a member – but it gets expensive after a while. If Zippie is sitting on the farm for 7 hours, that gets expensive, no? Cheaper to take a cab?
My assumption is I can get a lift home on the keg bus.
Well…. yeah….. if you are going to continue to sandbag (how many more do you need till 10??) I might mooch from you. That would be most wonderful! I have to do Cat 5 until I get get to Geeze-Cat-4 class.
* Significant other is the problem. Significant other gets the one car so she can go to do adoption events. Did I mention that Mia is available for adoption and is a sweetheart?????

ParticipantJust remember, if a cab takes you out there, there’s basically zero chance they’re going to pick up a fare for the drive back. A few potential concerns to unpack with that, depending on how much you care.

ParticipantOkay, i’ll bite. My assumption is the opposite. My experience with taxis is that they LOVE big long fares – and hate short distance small fares that require them to get back at the end of the line trying to pick up a ride. Is that wrong Two Wheels?
Otherwise, why would any Arlco taxis want to take you to the airport – which they seem to love doing

Because they can pick up someone on the way back from the airport for a big long fare on the return?

Bus? All of them are fitted with bike racks. Or if you start before 7:00 or on a weekend, you can use Metro. Of course, this depends on bus or Metro going where you want to go.

No, they are not allowed to. The airport taxis (Dulles) have (had?) a monopoly of pickups. You cant do a pickup out of jurisdiction (legally)

ParticipantI thought for CX there were 3/4/5 Masters categories? I did a couple 35+ 3/4/5 races (I’m assuming you’re talking CX not road here).
I gotta say, getting to the events (and back) is one of the worst parts of racing.

You might be right…I’ve only taken Washington Flyer to Dulles, so I don’t know how other cabbies feel about going out there. I have, however, had experiences in DC where cab drivers didn’t want to take me some place because they’d have a hard time finding a fare for the trip back.
But my point was, you seemed concerned about the externalities of your choice of how to get to the races, so I was just pointing out that there are such issues with taxis that may or may not be more significant than other options. How you weigh those is totally up to you, and I’m not gonna judge you either way.

Not quite right. If a fare calls an Arlington Taxi company to pick him/her up someplace other than Arlington, that is allowed. I call Red Top for pickups in DC all the time. Cabs cannot pick up random fares hailing a ride on the street but prearranged is OK. That’s also how you can call for a pickup at DCA.

No no no. It’s a good point. I dont want to skrew a cab (okay, given how little taxi drivers comply with traffic laws I dont care all that much). And I think if what you are saying is true…. then there are shuttles one can hustle???

Grumble. Last year Masters when to Cat 4. I actually had a conversation with the race orgs about the disparity between a 5X year old Cat 5 and (how old are you Tim?) a 28 year old. I mean, whatever, put in those ten. I’ll just wear a sign on my back that says “Please dont run me over when you go by”
Wait – arent you on BikeCultnetic? Beer Bus. I thought getting back from events was the best part of racing on their team.

The big green beer bus IS awesome, but it depends on if you have the day free and if there’s a critical mass of racers going/competing in the same time slots (for some “edge case” races, you won’t know until the last minute). Also, you have to factor in getting to the shop early enough, loading the bus (takes a few hands), potty stops, being cold in the bus, etc. Loading your own vehicle with your bike/spares/tools/etc and having no external factors/dependencies often made it more convenient/comfortable to just go by myself. (It also depends a bit on driving distance – getting a ride to/back from Luray was awesome, once the heat came on.) But driving myself say, to Reston or DCCX was definitely more convenient for me. I think the bus will probably be going to more races this coming season since the team is bigger. (Also, getting back is always more fun than going out there – since you can drink then!)
I think for Super 8 races, Masters are offered at 3/4/5 (I mostly did Super 8 races, not Sportif)
DCCX for example even had a 1/2/3/4/5 55+:
https://www.bikereg.com/Confirmed/25825There’s always single speed open

https://www.bikereg.com/Confirmed/25825Ah you youngsters. Never short on a back handed insult.
Um…. vvill…… how old do you think I am????
See…… that’s the trick. I dont quite make the 55+ cut off yet. That means I have to race with young punks like Tim
