TAKE ACTION: Protected Bike Lanes in Rosslyn, a Vital Link in Westover & more…

I can’t support the Westover changes, other than better road markings and a flashing pedestrian crossing at the between said Beer Garden and the Lost Dog plaza. The other suggested options (#3 I believe in some of literature I’ve seen) will only make a very congested area even more congested and dangerous. I don’t think the cramming a dedicated bike lane in here will do anyone any favors. Want to see change beyond my suggested flashing crossing? Put in an active speed camera at either end of Westover to slow people down to a reasonable speed. I’d even suggest they lower the speed limit through here to 25.

Speed cameras are not legal in Virginia. You may want to help Virginia Bicycle Federation lobby the General Assembly in Richmond to change that. It would be easier if the constituency of bike riders in Virginia was larger. To get more bike riders we probably need more protected – oh never mind.

I never understand the desire to put bike infrastructure WHERE THE CARS ARE. I want to ride my bike where the cars are not.

I never ride down Wash Blvd in Westover – there are too many good alternatives that are safer. Leave Wash Blvd to pedestrians, cars and the businesses that need parking.

I’ve been back and forth on this, but I think I finally end up agreeing that bike lanes are counterproductive. And as has been pointed out already, speed cameras can’t be done here. But I really, really like the idea of a 25-mph speed limit. The generally accepted 10+ mph buffer means 45, which is just dangerous in this location.

Speaking only about Alexandria, we have found that the addition of bike lanes on King Street as part of a road diet has both reduced the number of auto-auto collisions and increased the number of people who walk on the street. Road diets serve more than just people on bikes, who are, frankly, still a pretty small constituency in this region (outside the District itself).

If Washington Boulevard is NOT going to be the main way people on bikes will access the retail in Westover, ArlCo might want to consider signing alternative routes.

I often ride through here, and I will continue to do so. It’s fine, but you can’t just fly through without care. Anyway, Westover is a destination, and people are going to want to ride there, so I think consideration of infrastructure is warranted. I think what tipped me over to the con side is that infrastructure here will give a false sense of safety, or perhaps give some cyclists the sense that they can move through without paying full attention and therefore they might hit a pedestrian. I could be wrong, and I’ll work with whatever is decided.

Not only is Westover a destination, Washington is a direct, easy, flatter-than-alternatives route for heading east-west. All the more reason to put the bike route there.
