TAKE ACTION: Fix part of the Crystal Drive Bike Lane!

JBG Smith is prepping a MAJOR, block-long development in Crystal City called Central District (Phase I, Phase II). They are accepting comments here on their development.

Tell them to upgrade the Crystal Drive bike lane along this development to a protected bike lane! They are putting in a huge Alamo Drafthouse Theater and full-service grocery store along with other “lifestyle retail” like restaurants and bars. If the Crystal Drive bike lane stays a standard painted bike lane it will be a non-stop double-parking lane like the one down by Good Stuff eatery. You can add this comment to question #5 (any other suggestions?) and/or upvote other people’s comments to the same effect.

Here’s what I posted:

Crystal Drive needs a protected bike lane. This will keep people on bikes off the sidewalks, prevent double-parking in the lanes, and make folks safer. This project shares a block with a future Metro entrance, is right next to Metroway, and has a massive parking garage built into it. This kind of excessive on-street parking is a bad example of transit-oriented development, and should be reconfigured.

Thanks for the heads-up, Chris. I’m going to add that there’s no reason to have two westbound travel lanes on 18th until the approach to the Bell intersection. That extra space for the first 2/3rds of the block can be used to buffer/protect the eastbound bikelane, and protect the westbound bikelane behind the street parking they’re proposing along the north curb. Let’s not repeat the mistakes of Hayes St and the Crystal City Metro sharkteeth curbs by forcing bikes to mix it up with buses adjacent to a Metro entrance

In case anyone was headed that way, the Central District open house scheduled for tonight has been canceled due to inclement weather.

Not sure if it’s a mistake, but the rendering on the project site shows the eastbound bike lane as being removed and replaced with sharrows, which, as we all know, are garbage.
