It is indeed a big backpack. There were other groceries in it though, not just beer. I do all my grocery shopping with it, and on one particularly weighty day I weighed myself when I got home. I’m 160, and with the pack I weighed about 220. Needless to say, that was too much weight for the 23s that day.

He was talking about the raw weight of the rack, since the point was that by themselves (unloaded) they don’t add much weight to the bike.

And while 2lbs is a more significant weight % for a WW carbon road bike, I still am straining to see a market of folks that want to put panniers on their carbon bikes. A full rack, once fitted only takes a few minutes to install/remove from a bike (3 or 4 M5 bolts, typically?); it doesn’t seem like this would be overly burdensome for folks that want to carry more than a backpack of gear a few times a year.

If so, I was confused. He said “a full rack” so I assumed he meant a rack that was full. If that’s all one can get in panniers, they really aren’t for me in general since I take everything I need for work by bike, but I still would think one of these might work for me in certain circumstances. Two of my bikes have no mounting bolts so there’s no option to mount anything. Still, you’re right that it’s probably not a huge market; hence the kickstarter campaign rather than an established company putting them in bike shops everywhere.

“Full rack” as opposed to a “clip-on rack”. Like full fenders as opposed to clip-on fenders, I guess. In context of post(s) he was replying to it made sense to me :-)

Yeah, bikes without mounting eyelets could be a market, but as Ian pointed out there are other choices there already. But maybe not in *carbon*.

Cool, that meaning of “full” did not occur to me.

isn’t it closer to 6 six packs, as the beer might weigh about 15 oz per beer, but the glass will weigh another 7 oz. per bottle.

The math was off a bit at the beginning anyway since it wasn’t 50 pounds of beer but 50 minus the 15-20 that the pack already weighs. More like 35 pounds of beer. I think the Banjo Brothers large commuter backpack could handle it.

I was generally just having some fun, but yes, I only considered liquid weight, and not the weight of the containers for the beer. Obviously bottles would be much weightier than cans. And I was using the weight of water – 8 lbs. per gallon – as my measuring point. Because I wasn’t being too serious, I didn’t bother to goggle whether water weighs more/less than beer, though I guess I could have gone to the kitchen scale to conduct some research. Maybe I’ll do that tonight and present my findings at FCCII tomorrow morning.

Beer has a higher specific gravity than water (I’m a homebrewer) so it should weigh more, though I doubt it’s enough to make that much of a difference.

    It’s all fun.
