Super NoVA Transit and Transport Demand survey

Thanks! FWIW, this is what I posted in the open box at the end of the survey. The more I think about it, the more I’m disappointed that they don’t explicitly mention cycling…

Please consider redesigning this survey to allow users to input information about multiple modes of commuting. For example, I bike for most of my trips, but occasionally I ride the bus or drive. I know a lot of people who combine biking and metro or driving and biking.

Also, it is disappointing that the Vision Plan does not explicitly plan to identify enhancement for bicycling infrastructure. Cycling is clearly a realistic strategy for enhancing people’s mobility through non-single occupant auto means, especially when combined with other modes of transportation. Many times, cycling infrastructure can be improved with little capital investment. Cycling can also extend the range of accessibility to other transit services – e.g. bike routes and safe bike parking at a train or bus rapid transit station can allow a lot more people to reach the station without adding traffic to the roads, demanding resources for car parking, etc.

I’m disappointed they are having the Crystal City event during the middle of a weekday. All of the others are at night. Hopefully some bikers will be able to make it to the CC meeting.

I added some similar comments and I also pointed out that using a person’s work Zip Code for locations does not work all that well in D.C. (I don’t work anywhere near the Rhode Island Metro Station or even in NE.)

I went to the Leesburg meeting last night and can report that the SuperNoVa team is receptive to discussions of bike infrastructure. The more we have different voices bringing this up, the greater weight they will assign to this topic. So as many bike friendly people as possible need to attend this (even if they fill out the survey). And fill out the survey (even if you attend the meeting) making sure to add comments about fully networked bike infrastructure).

They are also very receptive to multi-modal discussions involving bikes, such as more bike racks on buses, improved bike parking, better bike access to/from stations and stops (need to emphasize a wide area, otherwise they tend to think in a 1 mile radius).

I second the need to keep the pressure on even if it does mean having to fill out multiple surveys, attend meetings, etc. It’s so unfortunate that when biking is *finally* getting on the radar screen we’ve enter the Great Recession (though it is easily argued that biking saves money in the long run).
