The recently-refreshed Daily Rider website (located at H St NE) is worth a look. Something from their Breezer, Biria, Bella Ciao, Gazelle, or Pilen offerings might work for your wife.
Thanks for all the advice – we went back to Bicycle Space and my wife rode and loved a Linus Roadster 8, which is now sitting in my living room next to the Xtracycle. It’s only been on two rides so far (one was home from Bicycle Space) and she’s already gotten a “Nice bike!” from a passing cyclist.
Green Lizard in Herndon has Brooklyn Cruisers. Very similar to Linus. You can even buy them online at Brooklyn, choose Green Lizard as a ship location, and GL will assembled the bike (included with the online price).
