ParticipantI think last year there was an alternative scoring system (Badass points?) that gave extra points for rides on colder days and fewer points on warmer days. Assuming the code is still intact, I imagine this alternative scoring system will still be around this year. This week is a great opportunity to get ahead in that system.

ParticipantThere is a Freeze Points Leaderboard that does some math that takes into account weather. There’s a thread from two years ago that explains the math.
You can access it by clicking on “Leaderboards” and then clicking “Individual Freeze Points.”

ParticipantThere is also, under “Alternate Scoring,” Steve O’s crazy idea, which captures weather using rider numbers as a proxy. Essentially you get more points on days when fewer riders ride and fewer points on days when more riders ride. The theory being that the worst days for riding are the days when the fewest people ride their bikes and vice versa.

ParticipantForget wind chill under 0°–apparently, we’ll be getting absolute temperatures under 0°.

I think you misinterpreted the map. It shows the departure from normal. That -18F is not the expected temp, it’s the delta from normal. Lows will be in the single digits, but not likely to fall below 0.
Remember, too, that wind chill does not apply normally to cyclists. Even on a calm day we are subject to a 12-18 mph wind chill from riding. In fact, you can tell your colleagues on every cold, calm day. “It was 18 degrees out, and 11 with the wind chill.”

Okay, the low for Saturday is supposed to be 3°, so not quite sub-zero. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capital-weather-gang/wp/2018/01/02/pm-update-extremely-cold-again-tonight-but-perhaps-briefly-near-and-above-freezing-wednesday/ Much as I like the fact that Freezing Saddles gets me out even in the cold, I could really do with a little less cold than that, regardless of wind chill.

Single digit temps with 20-30mph sustained winds and gusts exceeding 40mph are not “normal” wind chill conditions for the area
