Stupid Garmin

So I have a Garmin 510. It’s maybe 2-3 years old. It’s mostly fine, except that I usually have to turn bluetooth off then back on to get it to upload a ride through my phone.
Right now, for the second time in a week, it’s had trouble saving a ride. Last time it never saved and just ate the ride. This time it hasn’t gotten there yet, but it’s been saving for like 10 minutes. The ride was just a quick errand, like 1.5 miles, so it’s not like there’s a ton to save. After the first time I did a factory reset, figuring maybe it just needed to clear out old stuff.
Shoot, as I type this, I realize that doing a factory reset probably undoes whatever updates I’ve applied and now I’m likely way behind on my updates. But the problem happened once before that, so it remains a concern. And yes, I know the rule is never update your Garmin, but I have a real problem with ignoring electronic notifications.
Anyone have any similar problems, or, more importantly, solutions? I keep telling my wife I’m going to upgrade my GPS and she can have this one (her GPS I bought used and doesn’t even have bluetooth, the horror) but she seems to regard this as a corollary to the S-1 rule. I think she’s crazy – I get a better GPS, she gets a better GPS, everyone wins, right?
