    They spontaneously gave me a free month, but I cancelled at the end. If you have a heart rate monitor and cadence sensor I think it gives you some cool tools, but I do not so all that was lost on me.

    You can also slice and dice your segment results by age and I believe weight (so ELITE!).

    Besides viewing segments by rider age and weight, you can filter by gender, by membership in groups, by “friends” (folks you follow or who follow you) and just your own results (commuters can see if we’re getting “better” on a particular overpass or hill). If you have a power meter, Strava generates watts vs. time plots that are a bit easier to read without a PhD in sports physiology vs. Training Peaks. If you just have a GPS-equipped smart phone, you can still log your rides (and runs) and see how you’re doing. The upload interface is simple and “just works” – far better designed IMO than the user interface mess on the MapMY sites.

    Honestly, it wasn’t really worth it for me from a user perspective. I mean, Suffer Score is kinda neat, but not worth the price of admission. I went Pro primarily to support the product, since I use it so much….might as well give a little back so they can keep improving the product…if they don’t improve it, I’d be much less likely to renew. Also, I’m hoping to get a cadence sensor in the near future, so combined with my HRM, maybe I’ll get some better data out of Pro.

    There’s a lot of really cool data (specifically GIS related data) you can get out of Strava going to Pro but one HUGE issue for me (and I’m sure a few other larger riders) is that their weight classes stop at 200lbs. If any of you have ever seen me and Tim Kelley (both of us are in this weight class) you can understand why stopping at 200lbs is pretty dumb. That said, I do the month to month and for $6 I feel like I get a really good value out of my subscription, even if it is limiting.

    It really good for looking at big picture power numbers and comparing wattage to previous rides. Not even Training Peaks or WKO can point you at specific rides to compare side by side.

    If you have a power meter they are spot on. :D

    If it’s just going off of the Strava calculated weight/distance/grade there is too much room for error on the shorter segments. I think the estimate on the longer rides can be pretty close.

    For example here is the ride that both Pete and I did together yesterday. We weight similar amounts and were moving at similar speeds for 6 hours.

    Any ideas why Strava insists my biggest climb is 21 feet by the airport, when I ride up the Custis every day?

    I’m with you on this. There should at least be a 250lb weight class. 300+ would be nice too I guess. Here’s a tip, if you want to do some rides and avoid Mr. Kelley – he doesn’t ride in southeast. Hardly anyone does. You can get top 10s just by riding a segment.

    I am a paying member for a couple years, but I am not sure the premium features are worth paying for. I subscribed because I wanted to support the product. I love that it is ad free.

    The one premium (?) feature I do use, esp since I was among those lobbying for it, is the adjustable heart-rate zones. In truth, though, I don’t really use the training tools since I don’t train in any deliberate sense. Suffer score is a nice simple metric, but only useful to compare with your own activities. Weekly mileage goals is a useless feature; I can just look at my mileage and know if I have succeeded (usually I do not meet my goals).

    I don’t care about age or weight categories because I am less than 35 and less than 180 lbs. I am sure that if that were different it would matter to me.

    I found a code (Google) for $10 off when I originally signed up, but not sure anything like that still exists.

    And their maximum bike weight of 25 lbs. Heck, my groceries alone can be 25 pounds :).

    Also, Strava doesn’t appear to know how hard it is to pedal into a headwind!

    I may have owned a bike as light as 25lbs. Maybe not. I think the limit is 25kg. My rig weighs about twice that unloaded.
