What are the benefits of Strava Premium?

What looks most tempting to me is:

    the heat map, kinda cool.
and not sure if it does this or not, but if it shows you on the map where your friends (follow(er/ies)) are, that would be a big plus for me.

I know with the free andriod app it tells who’s riding, but I don’t know where they are riding so I can’t go meet up with them. I’ve gotten around this with the life360 app. The down side of this is that it’s on all the time, so ppl know where you all the time, and it sucks the battery pretty hard.

So I’m most interested to know about the friends on the map thing, but what are the other benefits?

You should buy yourself a power meter and taking your training to another level. (Or at at least have some really serious commutes!) 😎

Or just borrow one of Tim’s many power meter equipped wheels. :D

Have people have particularly good or bad experience with their heart rate monitor and syncing with Strava?

    Here’s the Strava site:
    https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/22118588-Android-and-external-Biometric-sensors

    What monitor do you use?

Strava says, “Please note we do not currently support the Zephyr HxM Smart using Bluetooth LE.” I take that to mean that Strava is not compatible w/ Zephyr’s best monitor; that’s unfortunate. Is the Zephyr HxM good enough?

Kind of surprising but you don’t even need to go premium for the heart rate information, just for the suffer score: “For Premium members, Strava analyzes the total time spent within different heart rate ranges, and can calculate a Strava Suffer Score to measure how hard you work during each activity.”

    Thanks

I’m guessing that most people using heart rate sensors are using Garmin devices and not the Strava phone app. It used to be that being able to set your heart rate zones was a Premium-only feature (maybe still is?); if you are actually going to do HR-based workouts (and want to use Strava for analyzing this) this is probably a critical feature. Strava’s default HR zones were kinda bizarre; the Joe Friel zones seem to be more of a standard (for cycling, anyway). I do like the suffer score since it gives me a simple metric to gauge how hard I went on a given commute. When I am thinking more about fitness, I use that as a gauge to make sure I go easy enough on rest days (and also average HR).

I use the HR monitor with a Garmin–if I have problems, it’s not with Strava, it’s with the HR monitor not working so well.

    ^ Same.
