Wait, Wednesday is the warning day, and Thursday is the ticketing day? Which day will WABA be out in the lanes? Wed or Thurs?
Today. I’m heading out in a few minutes.

ParticipantCan you mention to MPD while you’re out there that it would be cool if they didn’t DRIVE in the bike lanes?

ParticipantI’ll be passing through on CaBi shortly. Do you think I can just get a warning for blowing all the red lights? Is this complete “you only get a warning for dangerous and illegal behavior” day, or is it only a free pass on u-turns?

ParticipantI went through from 7th to 15th at around 1230. While I saw a nice representation from this forum and WABA, I saw not one single police officer. I realize it’s a long road and I just rode through once during the pretend enforcement period, but I went through two of the hot spots, in front of Archives and around 13th, and nothing.
Thanks to all of you who were out there today, though, doing what you can to educate people. But all the education in the world doesn’t do a bit of good if there is never an expectation of getting caught.

ParticipantNice to see vvill, americancyclo and Jrenaut out there. Thanks y’all for keeping it real!
(The one on the right is scary. I”d stay away from him.)January 30, 2013 at 7:31 pm #962034Dirt

I think most of the enforcement people were winding up by the time I got out there at noon. I’d heard that 3 people got nabbed before I got out there.
On the good side, I handed out over 100 of the fliers and talked to a lot more people than that about the change in the laws and that all of those intersections and areas between intersections were no-u-turn zones.

I have no doubt that you, personally, made a difference out there. WABA, too. Now I’d like the DC Council and the Mayor and the DC Police Department to stop telling us “We know it’s a problem, and we’re doing something” and actually do something.
I mean, three people? You’d have to stand around with your eyes shut for two hours to only see three people.

Maybe that was my problem… I had my eyes open.

I’m trying to borrow some of your incredible ability to stay positive all the time, because right now when I think about PA Ave, it’s unbelievably frustrating.

ParticipantWow, that’s the first time I’ve ever seen Dirt in civilian clothes!
Great job folks!

ParticipantI just missed you guys – I put Maia in the trailer and went to the National Aquarium around 11AM. After locking up to the disabled-access ramp (on the outside, out of the way), going inside, through security, down the stairs, paying for my ticket to go in….after all that, the guards rush down to inform me that I can’t lock up there. “There’s a rack across the street” they informed me (funny, no sign saying I wasn’t allowed to lock up where I did).
If it were just me, then I’d say sure – but with the little one and the trailer its a 5 minute production to get the bike and trailer either locked up or unlocked so I just gave them back my ticket, got a refund, and left.
Rode down to American History, parked at the rack about 40 feet from the entrance and had a good time.Rode home at about noon with Maia falling asleep in the back – should have done a couple Penn Ave laps!
Sorry for an entirely off-topic rant – just needed to vent a little frustration at *another* example of bike unfriendly infrastructure.

I’m semi humanoid… and obviously not comfortable in human clothes. If it is any consolation, I had on bib shorts and a heart rate strap under that get-up.

I heard you didn’t miss much at the Aquarium. But this is from a guy who was used to the ones in Boston and Monterey.

ParticipantAgree on the aquarium. It’s nice, but small, and totally blown away by Baltimore.
Anyway, I feel a bit better. DDOT posted pictures of the educational campaign. Still not enough, but at least it was something.

Sad thing is this driver probably won’t pay one bit of attention to the flyer he’s being handed. I saw him on Water Street on my way home (@12:15 or so). He peeled out from a stop sign with me and the trailer right next to him, then sped down all the way to the end of Water St., did a way-too-fast U-turn, and backed into a space so he could eat his lunch or smoke a cigarette or something right there by Jack’s.
I thought about rolling up to him and -kindly- asking him to be a little more cautious on the road. Seeing this picture makes me realize its a good idea I didn’t. Having two people give him advice on how to drive in one day probably would have made his head explode.
