I’m so sorry :( If you’re on facebook, post on the WABA Women and Bicycles Community. People there are often willing to loan you their bikes so you can do those 2 rides, and you’re likely to find someone of a similar size to you! I’d loan you my road bike but it’s a 54 :(

Kitty, do you want to borrow my tricross for the IH century? 46cm. Smallest they make. :) I’m planning to ride it, but it will be on my fancy-pants road bike, so the tricross will be available almost certainly on that day. Possibly for 50 states also… what day is that?

Weird. I happened to notice that lock the other day (I work about a block away). Sorry to hear about this.

So sorry to hear this. Good luck. I’ve heard checking other cities’ Craigslists can sometimes work, but it didn’t when it happened to my GF.

If it helps, my agency has some offices in International Square along 18th between I and K. The bike parking in that garage is in view of the parking attendants, which makes me feel like it’s more secure. When I’m there, the garage is public access — you bike in from 18th, and elevators take you to the foot court on LL or the regular lobby on L. I’m only there for meetings, never before/after normal business hours, so I don’t know the ins and outs of access early, late or on the weekends. The parking attendants are nice, so I bet they’d help you out.

Thanks for your support everyone! I’m waiting for a call from my insurance company, but otherwise am going to stop by Revolution and see what my options are for replacement. If they have to special order again, then I’ll see if they have a return/order cancellation policy in case she shows up soon.

Thank you for the offer! I just might take you up on that. ^_^ By any chance does it have disc brakes? If so, I could bring my own road wheels!

I’ll report back with what the shop says my options are, in any event, I am definitely not giving up on IH or 50 States yet if it is possible to borrow something that more-or-less fits me.

That’s good to know! I think once I get her back/a replacement I’m going to see if the parking garages around will let me do that. Our building doesn’t have a garage, so I didn’t know if the nearby ones were limited to folks who worked there or not.

There may be one closer to you, but the one I described sounds like it’s only 2-3 blocks from your office (18th & K)

Yes, 160mm disc brakes. Just let me know if you do want to use it, it would be no extra work for me to bring it along.

I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. Bike thieves suck. And downtown too. There may be some video coverage of the area. Continually check Craigslist, Facebook and ebay. Also check in with the local police departments. Sometimes the police recover stolen bikes but don’t know who they belong to. A coworker of mine recently bought a lot of ten bikes off the police auction website to resell them. The original owner for one of the bikes contacted him via his Craigslist ad. Her bike had been stolen six months ago but she was unaware that it was in the police impound lot. And file a police report; you will probably need it for the insurance.

Welp, while I’m continuing to keep a look out for Furiosa, me not having a bike is unsustainable for my chosen lifestyle (its my primary form of transportation, choice exercise option, and socializing tool). So I’ve gone to the bike store to see what they can do for me.

The good news is they think they can get me a new Crossrip by midweek (my small size and no WSD option means special ordering ¯_(ツ)_/¯) So while we’re still waiting to hear back on insurance, and searching for Furiosa, I decided to pull the trigger and go for it. The bad news is not knowing what the insurance folks will say, it’s an expensive gamble.

Has anyone had any experience with bike theft and renters/homeowners insurance? What happened? Did they cover the value of the old bike?

Amalitza: Right now I have about 95% assurance I’ll have the replacement in time for the century, but if that falls through, I’ll happily take you up on that.

KLizotte: Thanks for drawing the connection between the insurance and the police report. I did a police report first thing, and just in case got a copy for my records. Now I’m really glad I did!

My bike was stolen in July 2000. I made a claim in my homeowners insurance, and they gave me a very fair settlement. I documented what a comparable replacement would cost, and compiled a detailed list of every accessory I had added. I took that list to a bike shop. They printed an invoice of what all of that would cost, and that was the basis of my claim. I also sent in a photo of me on my bike, for whatever that was worth. However, note that some insurance policies will cover replacement cost, and some will cover the value of the lost item taking into account depreciation. It depends on what your policy says.

Although the insurance company gave me a fair settlement, it caught up to me. Around the same time (a couple of years before or after, I forget), there had been a bad hail storm here. A lot of roofs in my neighborhood had been damaged. I called the insurance company and asked them to look at my roof. A guy came out, looked at my roof, and said there was no damage. I was fine with that since I wasn’t trying to milk the system or anything – I just to ensure that my roof wasn’t damaged. However, shortly afterwards, the insurance company cancelled my policy. According to them, I had made too many claims and was a problem customer. This was also around the time of the recession (early 2000s), and insurance companies were taking a hit because their big reserves of cash, which were invested, were taking a hit (caveat: I’m not a financial person so I may have this wrong, but this is what I understood was happening), so they became very selective on who they were going to insure, and I didn’t make the cut. After that, I had a bit of trouble getting another policy, because I was marked as a problem customer. Hopefully this won’t happen to you.

    Good luck. Bike thieves suck.

@Kitty: I have a spare bicycle that you can borrow for either Indian Head or 50 States, or both… — it is a Giant — but I think it is likely too big for you. The frame is marked with an L sticker and the notation ” ‘ rider height 5′ 11″ – 6’ 2″ ‘ “. The bike has rim brakes, and the pedals are combination SPD and flat. Hopefully you will have your new bike in time for these events. I’m riding 50 States myself.

All the best of luck to you.

Hey all, I thought I’d give an update.

While I haven’t found Furiosa yet, and doubt I’ll ever stop looking/wondering, I have opted to move on. My lifestyle is too bike-centric to be without.

I ordered a replacement CrossRip from Revolution last week, with the understanding that if we got it in then, the bike would make it in time for this weekend’s Century. Since I’d bought my bike, Trek has made some changes to the CrossRip line that I really don’t care for, so getting a new “CrossRip 1” (what they’re calling the “Comp” these days) wasn’t an exciting prospect.

In the end I decided spend the money to take advantage of their inventory closeout to get last year’s CrossRip LTD (two versions better than what I was riding), and hope for the best on insurance. At the end of it all, they’ll pay for the full replacement cost of the stolen bike’s equivalent, minus the deductible. So that still means a surprise financial hit we weren’t planning on, but at least I’m getting a better bike out of the deal, fully loaded with all of my commuter accessories, for the cost of a decent hybrid.

I picked up the bike from the shop yesterday, and with a few adjustments here and here, its good to ride!

Thank you all for your support on this. It’s really made getting through this situation a lot more bearable.
