Does anybody know the status of this road that Fairfax County and Belvoir were working on? The road in question is supposed to allow civillian traffic to get from Route 1 near Woodlawn Plantation to Telegraph Rd.

This will be a major boon for Mt. Vernon area bike commuters who need to go south and/or west in Fairfax.

The last I had heard about this project was that the road had been graded, but not surfaced and that the project was hanging in limbo. Does anyone have any more up to date information about this?

    Thanks!

There is a VDOT status page, but it was last updated in June:

    http://www.virginiadot.org/projects/northernvirginia/telegraph_and_mulligan_roads.asp

It includes a customer service phone number – they may have current status.

Thanks for the link MostA. The project was originally supposed to be finished by late 2012, but according to the reply it will be delayed some, so probably some time in 2013. I contacted VDOT customer service via email and here is their reply:

    Mr. Callahan,

The Mulligan Road Project between – US Rte. 1 and Rte. 611 (Telegraph Rd.) – is still very much alive. Project completion however might be slightly delayed as one of the unsuccessful bidders for Phase 2 filed a “bid protest” twice with the Government Accounting Office. It took almost 6 months to resolve the issue. The successful contractor has a pretty good track record in NOVA and will try and make up some of the lost time.

Construction is under the supervision of Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division (FHWA) and the contact person there is Thomas Shifflett (Tel. no. 703/404-6323).

If I can be of any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.

    Thank you.
