Okay not cycling related. Deal with it!
Anyone stand at there desk? What do you think? Good idea?
I find sitting in my gray padded cubicle that it is really really easy to fade off into la la land. Looking for ways to say more focused (yes, I know turning off the forum would be a good start).
I tried standing today. Uncomfortable- but definitely more alert. Has this worked for others?

ParticipantHad a standing desk for a couple of years now. Easier to stay awake, multitask & focus on active things. Harder to focus for long stretches of reading or writing.
It does keep the legs fresh for the ride home.

ParticipantI’ve had a standing desk for about 6 months. Advice I was given was to make sure you had a pad to stand on. I endorse that. I bought a kitchen sink cushion / pad from Bed Bath and Beyond. I also kept my options open, with a lower level surface, and chair, for longer writing efforts. I stand for email, other routine tasks.

ParticipantAnything (within reason) to avoid sitting is probably a good idea. Sitting is associated with significant health risks, even among people who are physically active. The more you sit, the more problems you have. Some recent studies indicate that this is the case, even if someone exercises a lot.

ParticipantI’ve wanted to try out a standing desk for a while. I wonder what I’d have to do at work to trigger the “we have to make special accommodations” alarm…

Thanks Dickie! I think I would fit right in. I already crushed my finger once this week.

Sitting for hours a day reduces circulation and can increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer and depression, according to the researchers quoted in the article. “Active couch potatoes” are defined as those who exercise frequently but still continue to spend many hours a day sitting (at work, at home, in cars, on subway trains). I would probably fit into this category. I usually average about 2 hours of exercise a day (bike, run, swim, strength training, casual bike rides) but I also sit a lot. A little less exercise in the early winter.
Frequent breaks or posture changes can help with circulation, even for those at standard desks and chairs. The breaks can be as short as a minute or so. Some people use desk cycle machines, where they pedal on a mini-stationary bike while seated at a desk. I’ve never seen one, so I don’t know how loud they are, or whether they are stable enough while in use.
Here’s an example of one product:

you need a recognized disability. wanting a standing desk generally doesn’t qualify, unless you can convince one of those medical marijuana docs to write you prescription for one.

ParticipantI didn’t like standing desks because my feet hurt by day’s endand my body ached a little (this is probably just because of bad posture). I really, really want to try a treadmill desk, but that’s just not in the cards right now. I think the slight movement would help with some of the pain of just standing still.

Looking for completely unskilled helpers!? If so, I’m in! I’d love to learn a little and see how stuff gets built. I’d be more than happy to provide some free weekend labor to do so.

ParticipantA bunch of people in my office are getting the arms that allow you to move your keyboard, mouse and monitor up to stand or down to sit. It’s very popular.
I would probably get it but I’m off to a detail soon…
