I rode really slowly today to maximize my ride time and because I sort of damaged my knees yesterday. Hopefully they will recover. I didn’t chase any of the many riders who passed me except for a full figured gal on a five speed cruiser. My male ego could not let that one go. Although she was seriously over geared, visibly straining on the climb up Rhode Island Ave., I could barely keep up. :(

I’m going to dig out the old Edge 705 and send my 800 back for a refurb.

What do you think was the primary cause for the failure? Lots of use, inclement weather, dropped it? I know you put a ton of miles on it, so maybe it’s just that. Hoping to keep mine running for a long time.

No idea. It locked up at 15 hours, 01 seconds elapsed time on a ride 3 weeks ago and hasn’t been the same since. It locks up, drops into diagnostic mode and puts up weird error messages. I’ve updated the firmware, switched to recording data on the MicroSD card and it still behaved erratically and locks up completely at 15 hours of elapsed time. It won’t come back from that lock up. I have to do a hard reset which kills all data in internal memory. Fortunately data is saved on the SD card.

How often do you ride over 15 hours!? The Edge 200 specs approx. 14 hours run time with normal usage.

I would be in second place right now if Sunday’s ride had uploaded. :( I love a challenge that rewards slow riding! This is my forte. My goal is to complete the 60 hours of riding time with the least miles of any participant, and the lowest “suffer score”. :)

I’ve done 4 rides over 15 hours elapsed time this year. I have a little battery that plugs into the 800 to keep it charged up. The 800 usually dies after about 12 hours of elapsed time.

When I did the T200, I topped up with a borrowed battery pack. In case of a malfunction, I kept a 310xt running in my back pocket with the brightness/contrast turned all the way down. That was almost 3/4 full when the ride finished.

I wonder if it would last longer if you changed the data point frequency. I don’t recall how often it records, 1 second interval? Change it to two? Something like that, sounds like a memory problem. Changing to a less frequent recording will be a little less accurate but might get you more time

There is a smart recording system on the 800 that can be used to save some battery. I don’t know the specifics of it, but you can adjust all of that with the 800 and maybe the 500.

The battery must go faster if you’re mostly watching the map vs. one of the other screens as well. I was “only” 8 hours into a century ride a couple of weeks ago when i got the low battery warning. I was following a route from a GPX for most of the day. I was surprised the battery went down that quickly.

Agreed. I nearly killed my battery during the 50 States ride because I had the map going the whole time. I made the mistake of using the GPX file provided by WABA, which didn’t include cue sheet directions, so instead of getting turn notifications, I had to watch the map the entire time. When I did Tour of Richmond, I had well over 50% left after 6.5 hours elapsed time, using a TCX file with cues.

Not that I had much of a chance in the first place… but getting sick last week really killed it for me. I might’ve been able to get 50%.

I’ve had good luck with this APC 10Wh battery: http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=upb10
I bought it a few years back when I did the inaugural NYC–>DC Climate Ride. I’m seeing on the webpage that they dont make it anymore. Now there are a few dozen competing brands/models battery packs to power USB devices (5V output at 500-1000mA).
