ParticipantAlready signed up. Already lamenting the fact that I only managed 35 hours of riding in the last month, so sixty hours over 3 weeks. Out of the question.
Does it count if I just sit on my bike in the living room while watching episodes of Boardwalk Empire?October 10, 2012 at 10:34 pm #953204vvill
Participant20hrs/week… worth it for a custom beer stein!
That’s a lot of hours though. Good thing I have plenty of lights.

ParticipantI’ll probably do better at the very end of this challenge, after I close on my house and am within spitting distance of the W&OD. But no way I’m getting in a lot of riding time while trying to close on a house and move. Whatevs, signed up anyway.

Participanthilarious response on the challenge page:
Quote:“Break free of the office, be riding by dawn, bury the obligations and make it happen for three unyielding weeks”.Translation: Tell your boss to shove it up his ass, then get on your bike and ride for your life after you tell your wife to shove the “Honey Do” list where the sun don’t shine. Then prepare to be miserable for three friggin weeks of unyielding bitching. Yeahhhh, were do I sign up?

ParticipantI bicycled for about 17.5 hours yesterday (Sunday) but my Garmin showed a low battery warning for the last 3 hours of the ride and when I try to upload it says “Upload failed, bad file”. When I select Ride History > Longest Ride on the unit, it shows Yesterday > 207.56 miles. This is the only bit of data the device shows, everything else is a blank.

Participant17.5 was approx. total elapsed time. Riding time was somewhat less, I stopped many times, even took my shoes off on three occasions.
I didn’t dismount my bike while riding White’s ferry, so that fraction of a mile should count, in my opinion.
But none of it counted, so nevermind…
Completing the challenge should be no problem, despite this setback. I ride a lot more than Tim Johnson does.

ParticipantIt seems there were a lot of people out around the Potomac yesterday. I think I saw Dirt post some pix of the C&O up around Great Falls which is, coincidentally, where I was yesterday with a work colleague. We were supposed to do an ~80 mile ride, but he’d ridden 60 on Saturday. That’s about 2x as much as he rode the entire month, so I cut him some slack and forced him to do 20. Does walking up all the hills count? He might not get as much credit as I did for the ride LOL (Rule #5 Jason!).
this entire week for me is filled with appointments and meetings. I’ll get 1 bike commute day
Going to have to really put some time in the evenings and long weekend rides to get that beer stein! Or maybe I can borrow some Garmin files that you won’t need, Rod? LOL

What Garmin model is it? I would occasionally have problems with my 310 not uploading files. Doing an “upload all” would sometimes fix it.

There are utilities for fixing messed up files. I haven’t used them before, but I’ve heard they existed. My 800 is having a lot of issues right now. Any time I use an external power supply it goes into a diagnostic mode and sometimes requires a hard reset to come back, thus wiping all of the internal data and resetting it to new. I lost my MoCo epic data that way. Luckily I knew what the basic numbers were at that point in the ride and I ended up being able to have mileage and rolling time figures that were accurate.
My 800 also locks and fails requiring a hard reset at all rides lasting 15 hours elapsed time… even when the battery is topped up. I guess it is time to send it back for a refurb.
One thing that I’ve done that helps preserve the data is to set it so that the data saves to the SD card instead of internal memory. If I have to do a hard reset, at least the data has been saved to the card and won’t be wiped out. This isn’t a perfect solution, but it is better than nothing.
My 800 spent most of the day sending up “This accessory is not supported” and “Accessory not attached to the correct port” errors. I kept clicking “Okay” and everything worked well. When it dropped into diagnostic mode, I’d restart the computer and restart the timer. I got a decent plot out of the ride. The never-ending string of error messages made it pretty hard to use the Nav when I was trying to follow a friend’s route through the city to try and catch up to him on my way to dCCX. I ended up just using the Braille method of nav through the city, which has worked well for me for years. I knew where I needed to get and I did a lot of “Well this looks like a good route” judgements. I got there pretty directly. Someday I’ll look at a DC bike map BEFORE setting out for the day.

ParticipantGarmin Edge 200. It seemed to be recording but there was a low battery warning obscuring some of the screen. I think it might have uploaded if I had waited a few minutes for the battery to charge before trying, but I was anxious to see the data, this being the longest ride I’ve done and the most climbing. I’ll call customer support when I get a chance.
This is a ride I’ve been contemplating for over a year. The Tim Johnson Challenge was the impetus to get ‘er done. W&OD to Leesburg to White’s Ferry. C&O towpath to Dickerson, the Sugarloaf Challenge Loop in reverse minus the towpath section, including the climb of Sugarloaf Mt. Towpath to Brunswick and the South Mountain Loop, including the climb of South Mountain from Reno Monument Road to the security gate, towpath back to Point of Rocks, then the part of the Waterford Double Cross in reverse from there back to Leesburg.
I’m going to try again next year when days are longer and I’m going to start earlier. I did too much of this in darkness. The free WABA head light did not cut it on the descent of Furnace Mountain Road. :p

ParticipantWhen strava is back up, you can contact them. I forget the email address, but if you send them a bad file they will try to repair it for you.

If you can fix the broken file, you can claim it.
