Maybe I should have picked up this book before the race:

FYI – I just read that two people died in a triathlon event in central NY this month (Musselman), both of them on the bike. One athlete was in the sprint race, the other in the half (Ironman) distance race. Kind of unusual, especially during a sprint triathlon. Apparently that guy ran into the back of a parked SUV. It doesn’t sound like the car stopped suddenly, so I don’t know what went wrong.

The majority of racing deaths in triathlon have still taken place on the swim, but it can also happen on the bike too. Be careful, whether you are commuting, going for an easy ride, training or racing.

I ran into a parked car once. It was several years ago when I was very inexperienced at riding on the street. I wasn’t hugging the curb, but I was definitely farther to the right than I should have been, which I think is a very easy mistake for a novice to make. Rode down a hill, around a curve and oh, hey, there’s a car parked right there in front of me. I was far enough over and had enough reaction time that I side-swiped it rather than hit it dead on. Obviously no idea how experienced he was, or what actually happened to him, but I can see something like that being not all that hard to happen to an inexperienced (or maybe even experienced?) rider racing for speed.
