ParticipantYeah this is why, as a rule, I never permit myself to ride longer than 25 miles. It’s not that i’m a whimp – its that I am health conscious.

Not sure why the hatred toward triathletes here. It’s a large community, just like the cycling specialist community (and the running community). You will find all types, some not so pleasant including those who, for some reason, see the need to create us vs. them situations. But most people are not jerks.
Guess you didn’t get the joke implicit in the thread title.

ParticipantWearing a tri suit also compresses the funny bone, leading to an inability to process friendly banter.

Chill.OK. I guess I don’t get the thread title. You also caught me at a somewhat sensitive moment, since I’m not supposed to do any riding today. I’m peaking/tapering for a long race this weekend (yes, a triathlon) and today is supposed to be a rest day. While it’s not that bad to cheat a bit and do something on a normal rest day, I really can’t cheat today and go out and do an hour-long ride. (But I will still probably sit on a CaBi bike and coast for 10-15 minutes to get one mile in for the National Bike Challenge today.) There are also other stressful situations I have to take care of, unrelated to bikes or cycling.

This is the saddest thing I’ve heard all day. This might be the most perfect June weather DC has ever seen!

ParticipantWell, I’ll still be out there for 10 minutes today. Plus I can sit around at the outdoor pool. No energy required to do that, although I am also trying to avoid getting too much sun today. In one previous long race, I got a nasty sunburn and dehydration because of all that sun. This close to a race, there’s no time to recover from dumb mistakes (like falling asleep outside while sitting in the sun, or doing a 2-hr. ride two days before a long race).

It’s from UP.

ParticipantIt’s a movie. Actually, the “squirrel” reference has popped up on the forum before. The youtube clips are a bit inadequate—better to just watch the movie.

ParticipantI see how overdoing it might increase risk, but doesn’t regular aerobic exercise decrease the risk of heart disease? It seems a well balanced article would mention that. Are obese sedentary types more likely to have heart attacks than triathletes? I don’t know but I think it maybe so.
I guess I’m too old to “Live fast, die young and be a good looking corpse.” but if I survive another four years, I’ll be out of the high risk group, “…The 40-to-60-year age bracket, often referred to as middle aged men in Lycra, or Mamils…”

ParticipantI can relate to missing a day riding. It’s a huge stress reliever and when I don’t ride it really sucks. It’s partly why I’ll ride in rain and snow…

ParticipantI’ve actually seen “UP” and thought it was a great movie (although a tad too violent to be a kiddie movie). But my mind was in a semi-fog today. Maybe it’s part taper madness and part pre-race focus. If it’s a sign of a killer instinct, then that’s good.
(Note that I will definitely not be winning anything, unless no one else in my age group shows up, which is unlikely.)
I did manage to coast around on a CaBi bike for 15 minutes today, pedaling as little as possible. And then another 10-min. short CaBi ride. I think people were walking faster than I was riding today. Could have been my slowest ride ever.

ParticipantTriathlons are great, seriously. They are a tremendous challenge and require a lot of thinking and strategy.
But you can die. On a bike, you have the option of stopping. You can catch your breath, seek shade, get something to drink.
750 meters offshore in the middle of a dark body of water you don’t have many options. And you still are only halfway done with the swim.
It’s a different kind of animal. It’s the boyfriend you hate but can’t stay away from. And the danger is what makes the whole thing interesting.
