Speaking Of Happy Hours…Proposal For Recurring Happy Hour(s)

So, after the Shirlington/Cap City Brewery Happy Hour last week (it was so great to meet so many of you!) I got to thinking it might be a cool idea to have recurring get-togethers at regular locations. That way people would know, “oh, it is the third Thursday, bike arlington will be at XYZ location tonight.” I figure Thursday is a good night because it’s later in the week but not Friday (which I gather would be unpopular). How about this schedule:

FirstThursday of the month: Chasin’ Tails (I know, it sounds like a bad strip club) in Falls Church right off the W&OD
Second Thursday: ???
Third Thursday: Capitol City Brewing Co. in Shirlington next to W&OD/4MR and not too far from MVT
Fourth Thursday: ???

The above is of course just a proposal. If it’s popular enough, it could be that we have different locations for the other Thursdays of the month, for members who find neither of these locations convenient. For example, maybe a Happy Hour in Fairfax, and maybe one in Clarendon? Or maybe even DC, even though this is Bike Arlington. That way, people all over are more likely to have a meet-up convenient to them.

Of course, I’m totally biased toward these two locations because they are very convenient to me But they also happen to be very convenient to the W&OD, with Cap City being also being somewhat close to MVT and DC.

Only problem with this plan is people tend to assume “someone else” will always take the initiative then nothing gets done; else it’s always the same folks doing the work every month. The reason the Fri morning club at Swings works is because no one has to do anything; everyone knows the routine.

Perhaps we could change the pre-destined places every quarter?

Exactly. That’s exactly the idea behind the recurring happy hour.

That would be cool to put it up to a quarterly vote, but in the end it always comes down to someone taking the lead. Doing these things by committee always devolves into inaction/indecision. My vote is to let us start with Shirlington on the third Thursdays and get a sticky post put up on the General board.

This has gotten really complicated.

Why don’t we plan for Tonic next week (Thursday 8/2) and Cap City again on the third Thursday in August (8/16)? We can decide what to do in September and beyond after the Cap City HH.

I hear Kathy did an amazing job hosting at Cap City. Would people object to lowering the bar and doing an old school, no prep, whoever shows up shows up and we find space as needed, type of happy hour at Tonic? I’ll try to arrange the schedule so I could be there, but it’ll be a little difficult (if we could do Wednesday 8/1, I could definitely be there, probably with my daughter!).

Again, its not complicated at all.

The data suggests the following

* Events closer to the river are better than events further away from the river.
* Weekly events will probably not work – but there is a strong desire for at least monthly events
* Thursday is the best evening.

Next you need a good joint and a host. That’s Kathy if she is so inclined and Cap City in Shirlington – and probably somewhere on the DC side of the river.

It’s really that simple.

LOL – caught! 😎 I’m afraid I didn’t word that very well. I had to be quick because I had a meeting coming up and thought it might be a simple way to gauge the level of interest. I’ll hold it open through tonight, and if we don’t get at least ten people who would be interested, maybe someone else can come up with a better alternative. (In case anyone is puzzled, I don’t think “likes” count for anything at all. We’re all just kidding around.)
