I am a little concerned about Falls Church. Generally this is a group of commuters and the location has to be remotely on the way home. Shirlington is a pretty good fit. GTown could work. I have looked at the SW Waterfront but it is largely dead. Another possibility is Crystal City – I have scoped it and the one good option I see there is Jaleos.
What about Rosslyn or Ballston instead of Falls Church?
Also, seems to me (admittedly DC-centric) that Crystal City would mainly be convenient for the people who could also make Shirlington, so one or the other, I would think.
What about one HH generally South (Shirlington/CC), one generally West (Rosslyn/Clarendon/Ballston/FC), one central/SW (Foggy Bottom, Gtown, Rosslyn) and the final central/NE (Columbia Heights, Capital Hill, all those places that are too cool for me to know about)?
Again, I probably can’t go much, so take my suggestions with a grain of … something.

ParticipantAnyone out there with IT skills that can create a web based survey of preferred neighborhoods? I’m thinking a listing of all possible neighborhoods (e.g., Clarendon, Columbia Heights, GTown, Shirlington, etc) could be shown with checkboxes. People would then check off those places they would be willing to travel to for happy hour. The neighborhoods with the top votes are those that we would concentrate on.

That makes sense, then we’ve got one centrally located and one for each major commuting direction
The beer garden at Standard (14th & S) is fun and has bike parking, though staking out tables could be tough. We could all roll in in our matching jerseys and give the hipsters The Look (or maybe just some Blue Steel).

ParticipantSurvey is ready for your input! Go to Cyclists-Goofing-Off-Agenda survey!
You should be able to see the results here.

I only rock Magnum
I’m all for Crystal City! Jaleo can be a bit expensive and maybe too fancy as well. But maybe some place like the Tortoise and Hare, or Frankies (gay bar = fun) on 23rd street would be better options?

ParticipantAs much as I like goofing off, I don’t know if I’d attend much more than once/fortnight, and more likely it’d be once/month. A good option for me in the summer months would be something that actually combines riding and going to a few different places (CaBi pubcrawl?), although I guess then in theory you can’t drink very much at all.

Thanks for doing this. Personally, I think the second question, “How often would you like to goof off?” should haev been “How often would you like to get together with forum members to goof off?” Otherwise, I’d answer it “all the time”!

I love Standard but it’s hard enough stalking a table for 4 let along a big party.
The new Tortilla Coast is right off the 15th St cycletrack and the if the food is as good as the Cap Hill location I’d recommend it.

ParticipantStandard freaks me out because it always looks so crowded. I’ve never been in. Great place to check out parked bikes though.

I had also thought of perhaps eliminating the Falls Church location in favor of something else, due to its proximity/redundancy to Shirlington/Cap City. However you just cannot beat the location for Chasin’ Tails…literally feet from the W&OD; I saw that as a key factor. I’m not against switching from Chasin’ Tails, though; there could be a splinter group
Just have the Thursday commuter club
I think maybe that is a topic for another thread though.
But I’m really glad people like this idea; cool to see it taking on a life of its own!

ParticipantI really had a great time at cap city brewery, and the food/beer was really good too! Unfortunately, my commute has changed and that’s way out of my way. I know the majority of the active people here are the Arlington-ish area, but it would be nice if at least once a month there was something in DC area. Georgetown, CapHill, etc, would be close enough for me to go to. Columbia Heights would be nice for those of us who are in Maryland or northern DC-ish areas, but not sure if we have enough. There’s honestly no way that each location is going to be convenient for everyone, so “area focused” locations might work best. It seems like it breaks down in to the Arlington-ish area, the Georgetown area, then a bit more north area folks. Maybe a google map showing our “convenience zones” would help?

ParticipantThanks for setting up the survey. I think you’re missing Clarendon as a neighborhood.
I’d support setting the general direction for each week (first thursday = south) and then figuring out the exact bar the week before.
Or, we do every other week, with the first week of the month being central (DC/Rosslyn) and the third week of the month being one of the directions, and we could just rotate through the directions. Again, we’d just pick the exact neighborhood and bar as the week approaches.
I imagine our “center” of working-gravity is somewhere around 17th and K, with most people headed south and west, but plenty in other directions, from there.
Less work upfront, a bit more work and attention required on the back end, but the opportunity to try new places and switch days may get more people.
