ParticipantAt least the excavation for Phase 1 of The Wharf appears to be finished:

But it will be at least a couple more years before construction is finished on this phase.
Charles Allen posted another photo of the excavation site: https://twitter.com/CharlesAllenW6/status/621721318313099264/photo/1July 16, 2015 at 8:01 pm #1034143PotomacCyclist

ParticipantAccording to The WashCycle, the developers of The Wharf will build a temporary pedestrian pathway from the Case Bridge sidewalk down to The Wharf. I only skimmed the article on my phone. I’ll read it more carefully later. The plan sounds promising.

ParticipantSo how’s Maine Ave lately? I’m going to a 4pm game on Thursday and I’m concerned that Case Bridge + Bakfiets may = disaster.

I have been going sidewalk to Fish Market, then into the general travel lanes to vehicular left onto 7th St SW, to Eye Street lanes, and, usually the reverse on the way back (though I find that somewhat less comfortable) I am barely comfortable doing that alone on a hybrid, I don’t think I would do it on a bakfiets.

ParticipantAlso thoughts on Memorial Bridge >> Mall Paths >> 4th St >> I St >> 1st St as an alternative? Google Maps thinks that only adds 5 minutes to the trip from my house.

ParticipantChris: My thoughts, based on both bike and daily car travel on Maine… On the bike, I have just gone to the East Basin Drive portion @ Jefferson Memorial, and turned across onto Maine Ave from there. Yeah, there are crossings (under Case is signalized), but better than tight switchbacks. On Maine, I have also run the sidewalks to the fish market, then used a coned-off section along Maine until 7th St (if it isn’t blocked by construction equipment). P St SW along the front of Ft. McNair is the calmer alternative to M St to the ballpark. Pavement is now largely good.
Going back, besides the PM rush hour volume on Maine, there are almost always tour buses parked all the way from Arena Stage to the fish market. When I rode to Tour de Fat, that was on a weekend and car volume was light. On that day, I could take the lane. You *may* be a wee bit safer on the sidewalk. There is a signal at the fish market to cross at.
Once you’re there, cheer LOUDLY. The ball team needs us right now.

As a neighbor of the fish market ~ oh pls oh pls oh pls get rid of that thing. It is a hold over of a by-gone day. No one there is a fisherman any more. There are no fishing boats. There is no fresh fish. Everything there is hauled in by truck. It’s the same fish you are getting ANYWHERE else. The only difference is that the fish in the fish market has been baking in the hot summer sun all day.
