I haven’t been down that way in a while. Any notable progress?

It was a mess when I went through this morning. All the asphalt was stripped off Eads and the the remaining surface was that rough, bumpy, wish-I-hadn’t-switched-out-my-wheels-last-night surface. Definitely not going that way again for awhile!

There are signs on the parking meters at 18th & Eads prohibiting parking between 9/23 and 10/4. I would guess that this is an approximate time line for the project.

Then again, it could be related to demolition work of the old post office on that corner. The building is scheduled to be demolished by the end of the year.

This morning, I saw several work trucks parked along Eads. I think they were loaded with asphalt. I think the work will continue for at least the next two weeks, maybe longer. I’ll probably post pictures after the repaving is finished, or after the cycletracks have been set up.

Anybody know what’s going on further down the street, past 23rd and by the water treatment plant and towards the 4MR trail?

Thanks. Actually, though, I was wondering about Eads St itself south of 23rd. They’ve had it ripped up for a while, steel plates over some sections, and I think they’re laying some kind of pipe under the road. But eventually that’s all supposed to get upgraded, and I thought at least some of the proposals included protected bike lanes, which in my opinion are sorely needed there due to all the bus/truck traffic and the connection to the trail. Anybody know if any of these proposals was decided upon, and/or what the timetable for any repaving/improvements might be?

Some sort of utility work, south of 23rd St. I think that section will be repaved too, but not immediately. The link in the first post of this thread might have more details about plans for each section of Eads St. There might be different lane configurations for different sections of the road. There isn’t space for a cycletrack on the lower end, unless they remove parking spaces. I don’t know if the County plans to do that.

None of this is set in stone. The cycletrack between 15th and 23rd is a pilot program. The County will study the effect of the new road configuration, on bike traffic, bike/pedestrian safety, driver travel times, traffic congestion, and so on.

I’ve never seen too much traffic congestion on that part of Eads (15th to 23rd), but maybe there are more drivers in the early morning. I’m usually there between 8 and 10 am.

Repaving and restructuring the roadway. The sewer work held up the paving.

I just sent a note to the County and will post their reply.

The repaving on Eads Street appears to be complete, at least for the section from 15th St. to 20th St. Possibly down to 23rd St. but I haven’t ridden over there lately.

The road crews are now working on 18th St., under the Rte. 1 overpass, across from the Metro entrance. That section of road was in terrible shape before.

There are temporary lane markings on Eads, with a reflective square every 10 ft. or so. The road surface on Eads is good, but the absence of lane markings can create tricky situations. I would still avoid riding along Eads until the lanes are striped and the cycletrack is in place. Shouldn’t be too much longer now. Maybe a couple weeks?

Repaving is complete from Ft. Scott to 15th Street.

Signs have been posted along Eads between 15th and 23rd Streets announcing the upcoming street changes.

I think the demolition of the old post office could be starting later today, at the corner of 18th and Eads. There are now jersey barriers in the road along the southern edge of the site and the sidewalk along Eads is now closed. A bulldozer removed the bushes at the back of the parking lot on the site, on Tuesday. Parking meters have been removed (but the poles remain in place) and temporary signs say no parking until Oct. 20 or 27. (I don’t remember the exact date.)

Be prepared for more dust and debris in and around that intersection in the coming weeks. The sidewalks will probably be closed for a while. Based on the practices at the other nearby construction sites, the sidewalks could be closed throughout much of the construction of the new apartment building, 1720 S. Eads.

While the building itself won’t have a direct effect on cyclists, the developer has agreed to pay for some road and sidewalk improvements in the immediate area, including the median on 18th St., the intersection of 18th & Eads, and 18th St. (beneath the Rte. 1 overpass). The sidewalks will be wider in the future. I’m not sure how the demolition and construction will affect the planned cycletrack on that block of Eads St.

A section of the (old) parking lane on southbound Eads Street is closed off for the demolition/excavation. The cycletrack won’t be able to run through that section until the fences are moved. I don’t know the timetable for the demolition work or whether that lane will remain closed throughout the entire 2-yr construction period.
