ParticipantI get a kick out of pulling up at a stop light next to a someone in a car who has their phone bluetooth tethered to their car’s sound system for hands free purposes. What many people don’t realize is that you can hear everything the person on the other end of the line is saying because the driver has the volume cranked up. It always amuses me.
The other sound I like is deep rim carbon wheels. The deeper the better.

ParticipantOne of the things I like to hear is “Have a nice ride.”
Many times it comes from someone flying by me at 25+ mph but I don’t care, it’s a friendly greeting.I was thrilled the first time it was said to me because I was so slow and wobbly, in fact it was a 50/50 shot I’d tip over at any given intersection because I couldn’t clip out fast enough. I definitely did not consider myself any sort of cyclist. Hearing it was enough of a compliment (unearned) that it kept me in the saddle another day.

ParticipantThe only problem is that usually “nice ride” sounds something like “ICE rooood” due to doppler shift. I had a guy riding my wheel this morning from East Falls Church all the way to TR Island. When he passed he said something along the lines of “thanks, nice ride,” but he might have been commenting on my pants for all I know.

ParticipantI always get a laugh when drivers ask me for parking advice when we’re waiting at an intersection.
As if I pay attention to such things!

“Go home and come back on a bike.”

this is why i’m always nervous to say “thank you” when somebody moves for me to pass, i feel like they’ll only hear “…k you” and assume the worst.

ParticipantI may have told this story before, but it gets better with each embellishment:
I really did have a tourist (Kentucky license tags) roll down his window and ask what was the best way to visit the Capitol without having to pay for parking. I suggested they drive home, park in their driveway, catch a flight to DCA and grab the Metro to Capitol South or Union Station.
I suppose that wasn’t very helpful — no wonder they think cyclists are weirdos.

It’s amazing how few people realize how easy it is to visit the Capitol and the Mall all day with free parking… Fortunately you have organizations like the Tea Party telling all its members how stabby DC is once you get east of the Capitol.
