besides getting to ride my bike, i love riding through the woods on the w&od, and sometimes seeing deer along the path, and seeing the “viva vienna” mural in downtown vienna, and smelling the wonderful smells coming from the whole foods in the morning!
why would anyone traveling this route not want to commute by bike?
Because not all of us get to smell ” the wonderful smells coming from the whole foods in the morning”? The trash center at the fish market is 1000% better than it used to be, but it’s still not “wonderful.” On the other hand, riding along the Potomac in the dark, with no one around, is worth it.

Oh man, thanks for reminding me of the smell of cookies that always permeated the air at the maple avenue crossing in the mornings. I always wanted to detour and go cookie shopping.

Participantlol! yes, i get to smell the dumpster as i arrive at work and as i leave – i can bring my bike into my office, but i’m required to bring it in via the loading dock, which is where the dumpster is. and the smell is less than pleasant! but you get past it and forget about it.

ParticipantI love that it’s reliably 5 degrees cooler once you come off the TR Bridge to the troll-invest wooden bridge than it is in the city.
And the smells from the Italian Store/BGR Shack at Lyon Village are… EVIL, if you’re trying not to eat delicious pizza/burgers every day.
Did I mention I’m looking forward to heading home tonight.

Same here, but our resident smokers are doing their level best to mask the dumpsters.

oh, that’s awful! i guess take a deep breath as you approach and try not to breathe in the smoke as you hold your breath and make your way quickly into the building!

OMG, the smell of their pizza is just plain stupid, I swear I must look like Wimpy from the old Popeye cartoons floating along on the aroma whenever I pass through there.

ParticipantItalian Store is an Arlington Classic. The pizza is good. The sandwiches are true italian deli – fantastic.
My smell of the ride??? The smell of Blue Plains while biking over the 14th Street bridge when the wind is wrong. If you practice, you can hold your breath the entire way over the bridge!!

Now see, I can get that AND the Alexandria water treatment plant! Awesome on a hot day!
On the other hand, there was the magical burger smell in Shirlington last night that was amaaaazing.

I suspect that you actually meant the Arlington water treatment plant on Glebe Road. There used to be a bike path between the Alexandria water treatment plant and the Beltway, but it was closed years ago.

Alexandria also has a small treatment plant just across Four Mile Run from Arlington’s – between Cora Kelly and the ball field. It is quite fragrant.

ParticipantIt’s mostly just car fumes in the garage where I park my bike – occasionally I’ll get smokers’ whiff when I’m riding closer to the front of the building.

^ this! Especially after you’ve just come up the Rosslyn hill and are on your way home for dinner.
I’ve been taking the W&OD/MVT instead of the Custis lately though, so I get all those lovely smells instead. But the flipside is that I don’t have to worry about Custis traffic or the Lynn St intersection. I went home that way a couple days ago and almost got hit at the crossing (on a full green ped light). Black SUV. Car tires screeched. HR went up. I’ve decided not to go home that way anymore this summer unless I need to get back quickly.
Err. I love my commute! The morning views across the Potomac, whether it’s 14th St or Key Bridge, are marvelous, and I love passing the Lincoln memorial in the morning before the tourist throngs and segway convoys.

ParticipantI love my commute/trail when it’s not too hot or cool out. Like when I rode home on Thanksgiving evening last year from family up by Silver Spring. Largely deserved RCP and the MVT had only one soul on it, me. It was great.
On the actual commute, I love the view and watching the water.
