there are over 313 million people living in the u.s. (source: http://www.census.gov/population/www/popclockus.html)
we drive over 11 billions miles per day, or, on average, about 35 miles per day per person. (source: http://www.bts.gov/programs/national_household_travel_survey/daily_travel.html)
average fuel economy for new vehicles sold in the u.s. was described to be 24 mpg. older vechiles get less (so we’re being conservative here). (source: http://bottomline.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/04/10/11122287-us-fuel-economy-tops-24-mpg-for-first-time?lite)
if we all opt to bike or take public transportation just one day a week, we would consume 458 million fewer gallons of fuel per week, or over 23 billion fewer gallons per year!
if it isn’t practical to commute by bike for our entire commute, even driving part of the way and riding the rest of the way can make a huge difference!
if you can commute part or the whole way by bike every day, you can make an even bigger difference!
i’m glad that we’re making a difference in this small way
