Thanks to you kind folks I think that my glove death stink has finally been held in check (I bought the Penguin Sport Wash) but I still have a pile of sweaty gear draped over my frame in the corner plus a weeks worth of work clothes in a duffel (I drive in on Mondays with the week’s supplies). It’s not what I’d call locker room stinky in here but nor is it spring fresh. I keep a bottle of Frebreze under my desk at all times but have yet to find an air freshener that doesn’t make me ill.

I’d love my stuff to dry during the day which means air circulation but pumping my sweat through a fan probably won’t make folks too happy. My engineer brain is working through a vented garment bag with a CPU fan and carbon (or other stink killing) filter insert- has anyone seen a product like that?

Just wear it into the shower–a little shampoo will do it good!

Yup +1 for this approach, shampoo does a great job of breaking down hair oils without being harsh on your skin. I’m leery of putting any cleaner on something that’s going to be in contact with my forehead/face

On a slightly different but related topic – anyone have tips for washing helmet straps? Mine are starting to look and -smell- significantly less than clean, to the point where I took my spare helmet today.

+1 on shower + working shampoo into straps and pads and rinsing. If it gets really bad and you can go without it for a few hours, you can always use the mentioned method, squeeze out any water and then give all surfaces a spray of disinfectant (e.g. Lysol). Let that sit for an hour, then rinse thoroughly, rewash using skin-friendly shampoo and rinse again. I’ve had to do that in the hotter summer months from time to time to fight off helmet funk.

I’ve also found that you can take any wet (clean) clothes and roll them up with the camping towel. If you do it right you can get a surprising amount of moisture out of things like chamois.

That sounds like something Bear Grylls would say before satisfying his thirst… ewwww chamois water…

My helmet I took into the shower
To gently shampoo and then scour
    My helmet now gleams
    From soap suds and steam
But my wife watches me looking dour

Happy to say the shower worked wonders on the helmet straps. They almost look new.

But after the next day’s ride (which happened to be 97 miles), the funk smell came back – it was in the padding. The padding is detachable though, so I hand washed that separately and it’s all good now. It all got an extra rinse cycle this morning anyway.
