ParticipantI haven’t tried them. From the description they’re 75% a 50% wool blend, which doesn’t seem very wooly. FWIW, REI is having a sale on smart wool and REI brand socks right now, in various styles.

ParticipantI have some Sock Guy socks. I wear them in the summer; they really aren’t very warm. Smartwool makes socks in different weight and they are the best I have found. I like defeet too, but they are not as warm.

ParticipantI have some lighter Sock Guy socks (Fat Tire wool and Richey non-wool promos), but for winter I use Smartwool, Icebreaker, or Lorpen merino socks. You can always find some on sale at Sierra Trading Post. I also have an older pair of DeFeet woolie boolies that are very warm.

ParticipantSmart Wool pure Merino Wool is all you’ll need for winter riding/outdoor activities. Works for me.

ParticipantI got some WABA socks from Sock Guy. They are ok but they are not winter socks. I am sold on ibex merino socks. Very very warm and snugly like Pete’s fully pink unicorns.

ParticipantI have a couple Sock Guys socks in various weights–I really love the summer ones. The winter ones are pretty good too, but I don’t like thick socks because I like to be able to wiggle my toes. I just use extra warm shoe covers!

I have some base layers labeled as “wool blend”…I didn’t check the label until after wearing them a few times and they’re like 7% wool. I’m guessin the tag is made of wool and that = blend.
Also, +1 on the REI sale. I just picked up a couple pairs of thin Smartwool socks to wear with my winter boots (all my other wool socks are too warm!), and I think they were on sale for $12.99.

ParticipantI recently bought a bunch of cheap 50% wools socks and it turns out that’s plenty to keep them from getting stinky which is my main reason for wanting wool in my socks. Once you get lower than that there’s probably no point to having the wool and certainly it’s not worth paying a premium for it (if it’s cheap wool it seems like a relatively low amount can still make the clothing scratchy while providing essentially no benefit!)

ParticipantThanks Fellas,
SockGuy sounds like they are decent but not for winter. Too bad, they are always pretty cheap. Looks like the Smartwool are a good choice. I have a bunch from my backpacking days, i guess i will be attic shopping this weekend. I have one pair of Sportful that are thick merino that are my favorite, but I never can find in stores.
thanks againNovember 22, 2013 at 7:37 pm #986731GuyContinental

I love my woolie boolies! Hands down the best winter sock I’ve ever owned… you can also earn a pair at Snotcycle (just by showing up)

ParticipantNone of them are superwarm, but I have 3 pairs of DeFeet wool socks that I love, a pair of Chrome branded wool socks and two pairs of Swiftwicks. One of my DeFeet socks has toe holes already (after lots of use). The “problem” with wool socks is I wear them all the time even if it’s not winter, and even if I’m not cycling (unlike most of my cycling gear, which I want to take it off as soon as I’m home).
The warmest socks I own are just some cheap anonymous merino wool blend ones I bought off ebay. They’re for hiking, so too thick/soft for proper cycling use but when it’s really cold I’ll use them.

ParticipantI don’t know where I got mine either, but I have several pair of hi-loft wool (I think, maybe synthetic blend) socks that I would love to be able to find more of! I use a summer bike sock under them as a wicking liner.
They really hold up their shape and their loft even when damp, so my feet stay warm. They’re even sort of cushion-y. I will be on the lookout and will report if I find. Standard wool bike socks are fine, but these are perfect.
