There, I fixed that for you. M St is an abomination.
It’s really not that bad at 7am. Just ask our resident KOM! (americancyclo)

Yup- I think this is one for the “My ride would be better if…” thread. I usually terminate my trail pm ride at that Lee exit and navigating the crazy roots at the top, braking hard through the gravel and then navigating around the bollard, onto Lee and across the I-66 entrance is one of the more interesting sections… Or are you talking about the steep ramp on the CVS side of Lee? If so, the curb cut at the garbage cans (75′ up) is fine and not on a blind corner.

I’m so confused! I think I was talking about the slight turn/ramp with the convex mirror on the north side of Lee, coming down from S-curve of death. But I agree with GuyContinental that the ramp on the south side with the bollard, roots and I-66 crossing isn’t great either. The swooping u-Turn ramp on the north side I’ve never had huge issues with (I used it this morning actually), but I do always make sure to actually do a proper stop when using it.
I need to learn some of the backstreet alternatives to the Custis/Lee sometime.

M Street is a breeze — ooh, wait, you mean M Street NW! Yeah, it sucks. (Although I hear it’s not bad at 3:00 a.m.)

Move that to 3:30am or 3:45am and that may be true. At 3:00am, there are still some roving bands of drunkards randomly spilling off the sidewalk into the street and shouting that anything that moves (real or imagined), plus taxis making swooping u-turns trying to collect them.
And while M Street is pretty horrific, it is quite the survival skills builder. I take it several times a week from Key Bridge to the far end of Georgetown when I am biking into into the Northwesterly parts of NW.

ParticipantM Street is totally fine in the morning. The far right lane is usually fairly wide open.
It is horrific in the afternoon.

I follow the USCG COLREGS when calling passes:
“(a) When power-driven vessels are in sight of one another and meeting or crossing at a distance within half a mile of each other, each vessel underway, when maneuvering as authorized or required by these Rules:
(i) shall indicate that maneuver by the following signals on her whistle:
one short blast to mean “I intend to leave you on my port side”;
two short blasts to mean “I intend to leave you on my starboard side”;
three short blasts to mean “I am operating astern propulsion”.
(ii) upon hearing the one or two blast signal of the other shall, if in agreement, sound the same whistle signal and take the steps necessary to effect a safe passing. If, however, from any cause, the vessel doubts the safety of the proposed maneuver, she shall sound the danger signal specified in paragraph (d) of this Rule and each vessel shall take appropriate precautionary action until a safe passing agreement is made.”Haven’t used 3 short blasts yet, as I don’t own a fixie. And for those of you playing at home the danger signal is 5 short blasts not “hey watch-it A–hole!”
I see you are using the Inland rules and Regs. I stick with those unless I’m riding down embassy row.

I passed someone on the MVT at Gravelly Point on the way home Thursday night who was calling passes very nautically. He still seemed startled when I called out “Ahoy to port!”.

ParticipantPort and starboard are so confusing when I’m not facing the stern.

Must have been SlowTriGuy. He was wearing a pirate hat during BTWD.

ParticipantNew personal record today! (What an awesome morning!) 9.8 miles – one hour door to door.
OK, so it’s twice as long as it would take you guys, but it was really good for me! I rode a lot in my big chainring instead of the center one and felt quite speedy!
Of course I forgot to Strava it so I could be the queen of my commute
I’ll have to do that next time.

ParticipantIt was such a perfect morning for a ride, I think I’ve passed you a few times in the past few weeks on the MVT. I have the blue Timbuk2 messenger bag.

ParticipantPerfect morning if you were heading south/east on MVT. Imperfect if you were heading north/west, particularly with a bag. The temp was great, but the wind was killer. Plus only 2 called passes of 7 today.
