Kel,
Take Dirt’s advice and wear a cycling cap under your helmet. It’s fairly easy to dip your head slightly (kinda like flipping down the visor in your car, if you have one of those cages) and block the sun and still be able to see. While Dirt also recommends them for blocking overly bright bicycle lights, I’ve had much less success because I have to dip my head too much because the light is frequently coming at me from below eye level, and have trouble seeing what’s in front of me.
With some serious trepidation about looking too ELITE, I just bought a cap based on Dirt’s light-blocking suggestion- my only (other) concern is the impact on head position, I was having pretty serious neck issues because I was craning my neck to see beyond a helmet visor, I’m not sure that a cap won’t cause the same problem.

ParticipantIs also going to cause you to retain heat – head is a major source of heat loss (aka air conditioning). May be good in winter; bad in summer.

I actually use a wicking cap all year long. Helps keep the sweat from running into my eyes.

Back to the off-topic topic for a moment, The Clymb has a bunch of cycling stuff on sale right now. Holla if you’d like a referral link.
Also, someone needs to explain to me this picture, for I do not think I am ELITE enough to gaze upon this.

I get those emails from the clymb and even got fooled into signing up. I am underwhelmed. Do you follow cleansnipe.com, Kel? From my experience that has better deals.
As far as the picture…I was young, desperate and needed the money. What can I say?

If you can find one, a synthetic/coolmax cap is way better than the cotton cycling caps. Pace makes them, as does Walz. Occasionally you can find halfway decent looking ones. I wear one year round (for the UV protection). If used in conjunction with a good helmet with lots of ventilation, the cooling is still pretty good…better than a cheapo helmet and no cap IMO.

I haven’t bought anything from The Clymb yet but every now and then they have some decent looking deals. Y’know, until they burned my eyes out with transparent cycling jackets.

Ah, but I only have the blinding light problem in winter so should be OK there. Plus, I paid a ton for a super-high flow helmet, why would I block any of that air except to stay warm? Regardless, probably should have thought about it a bit more and bought CoolMax vs cotton (thermodynamic nudity) but EMS had an inoffensive-looking PI cap super cheap (LINK) and I needed to spend a few extra bucks to get free shipping. If I fall in love with the concept, I’ll look for another one.

ParticipantHa ha! I rode TWO DAYS IN A ROW! (Ask me how I feel tomorrow afternoon, for I plan to DO IT AGAIN!)
Everyone passed me today I think. Except for people on CaBis.
I’m assuming I’ll get faster someday… I hope…
It was chilly this morning and I almost wore a jacket but then I didn’t because I figured I’d want to take it off after 5 minutes and that would be annoying. I need sleeves or arm warmers or summat. Or maybe just a really big vat of embrocation to get through the winter.
Or Sterno! That’s kinda like embrocation, right?
It was a gorgeous morning and there were lots of cyclists and runners and planes and as I came over the bridge I saw some people in the river (well, people in boats, which were in the river) rowing… or crewing? Crowing?
Later I shall ride to see you all at the Hour of Happiness!
If the sun doesn’t blind me and I don’t run into someone on the 4MRT, that is. There were a few spots yesterday where I couldn’t see a freakin thing while I was riding. Gotta get a cycling cap and see if that helps. I did see some awesome blue herons in Four Mile Run though.

ParticipantDid I pass Baiskelli at the 66 overpass on the Custis? Just met you that one time last happy hour, so I wasn’t totally sure.

I was there today, so maybe. I was coming from Lee Highway and joining the trail there from the west. I was the incredibly good-lucking guy going unbelievably fast and barely breaking a sweat.

ParticipantWho was wearing a BikeArlington jersey this morning on Maple ave in Falls Church around 8:30 heading Northwest around Great Falls Street? To be that stylish you have to be a forum member.

ParticipantTHREE DAYS IN A ROW! (and Coffee Club!)
Possibly the only thing keeping me from quitting my job today and becoming a hobo.
I will carry my dog in a polka-dotted kerchief tied to a stick mounted to the rear rack on my bike. I will learn to bunnyhop so that we can leap onto boxcars and ride the rails, stopping only to camp and eat beans from a can around the communal hobo campfire whilst my fellow hobos play the ukelele and sing the fine old hobo songs we all know and love, like “There’s a Hole in my Lycra, Dear Liza, Dear Liza” and “99 Bottles of Nuun on the Wall”.

At least you’d be a stylish hobo on a bike. And you could still go to Coffee Club.

ParticipantThat awkward moment when…
For the SECOND time today, you realize you forgot to hang up your kit after changing into work clothes.
Ewwww.
