There were only a few cyclists out early (I was crossing the 14th St Bridge before 0600) but most were in need of lights. Runners as well!

I don’t know which marketing guy thought that a quarter sized piece of reflective stuff on the back of a technical tee qualified as “enough” but I’d like to invite them for a pre dawn ridealong.

Better than nothing; I’ve noticed that I can see the little tiny reflective strip on the back of the loop on a pair of running shoes from a zillion miles away, running along like disembodied feet. If someone is wearing anything more than black PJs and hemp sandals I <3 them.

Where was everyone this morning? Seemed like 80% of folks took an extra long weekend. I wasn’t passed on MVT at all and only passed two others. And during the peak time. I’m envious of all those with the extra day off.

I think all the kids are back to school this week, so there are a lot of school orientations and just general hectic schedule stuff messing with people’s regular commutes. Probably a lot of riders drove in today. I did :(

I had to be in an hour and a half early today, and I have to run tonight because I was lazy yesterday and didn’t do it/was resting my adductor. Stupid adductor.

I’ll be out tomorrow sporting my new venty helmet (white) and new TwinSix jersey (black w/ stripes). :D I’ll still have to be in an hour and a half early though :(

Awesome (ly humid) ride this morning!

Started out before the sun came up, there was no traffic, hardly anyone on the trail (except for a few people that called their passes AND said good morning!), very peaceful. :)

I ProLinked everything on my bike that could be ProLinked last night and it was like riding a stick o’ butter this morning. Well, maybe a tub of margarine with some toast crumbs and little blobs of jelly in – it is still my bike, after all. But it was very smoove.

Moved my seat up again. Need smaller shorts. They get stuck on the nose of the saddle :p

Why can I ride in the morning with no breakfast, but cannot ride in the afternoon without giant lunch?

The Blackburn Flea light sucks at holding a charge. That is all. :)

This morning was quite pleasant. Only one no call and even the doublewide stroller jogging guy did his best to move over some for the bell. It also helped that the wind seemed to be at the back today. If only we weren’t losing daylight.

Aside from the humidity (which sucked), the ride up FMR and the W&OD was good, marked by a dramatic use of headlights on bikes. In excess of 75% of the cyclists coming down the W&OD had working, effective lights. Bravo!

I concluded that in the pre-dawn twilight, gray clothes seem worse for visibility than black. The peds wearing gray running gear blended right into the background. The ones with black presented a contrast. Damn few peds lighted or wearing reflective stuff however.

When I went running last night I had on a white hat, white shirt, a headlamp and my blinky tail light :D

I do not want any cyclists to not see me! I am slow and dumb when I run. (I do not pull Crazy Ivans though.)

Also I turn BRIGHT GLOWING RED when I run, so that’s probably visible from space.

Zoom! The air actually felt a bit chilly this morning and there was some sort of large glowing citrus fruit lurking just above the treetops.

I felt fast but Strava says I wasn’t.

Lots of people out running this morning. Don’t they have jobs? GO TO WORK, YOU LAZY RUNNERS! ;)

I so wanted to make it to Coffee club this morning, but my rear spoke said not so fast. About a mile into my ride this morning I had to return home and spend the next 30 minutes re-truing my wheel. took the bus and felt dejected. On my ride from the Pentagon I think I passed Arlington Rider on the ramp up to the 14th street bridge though, “ding-ding-Passing,” “Thanks!”
    was that you Kathy?

It probably was. :) It was a nice ride in this morning. Sorry I didn’t recognize you. By the way, I really enjoyed the photos of your family vacation. It was so cool to see all of you adventuring by bicycle!

p.s. Sorry to hear about your spoke problem but am glad you could fix it so quickly.

I might try to rouse myself in time make my first visit to Coffee Club next Friday. I was going to try to go today but I had an early morning dental appointment. It wasn’t bad though – my bike-friendly dentist encourages me to bring my bike right into his reception room, and while I waited another patient wanted to know all about bike commuting and said he wants to start doing it too. That made it sort of fun.

Lots of kids from the local Uni’s (GW and G’Town) jogging on the MVT in the AM. Havent a clue about trail traffic while they gleefully enjoy the latest tunes on the iToy the ‘rents bought them.

Last year was impressed by how many veteran joggers on the Custis had lights!

Then there are the ELITE cyclists with the high power strobes. 😡 Those guys are awful.

You can probably thank the Bike Arlington light giveaways for many of them. We were lighting up anyone who would accept the blinkies. I did a full dark ride on the 4MRT and W&OD from Rte 1 to Ohio St. Way too many bike/pedestrian/runner ninjas out there. And I agree, the ELITE riders need to learn how to aim their excessively bright lights (and please no high power stobes.ever on the MUPs!).

Actually it was a lot of those headband LED things – also shirts that have light tubes in them.

Repeated for emphasis: (and please no high power stobes.ever on the MUPs!).

I was also surprised to see as many runners as I did at 6am. And yes, most were running ninja-style. I imagine with the cooler weather there will be a lot more runners on the trail.
