I saw lots of people passing me, so some of them must have been you guys!

Let’s see… I was heading north through Gravelly Point at 7:45 AM. I was the slow, bright red person :D

(Black MTB, blue shirt, orange messenger bag, black shorts, beige-ish spotted Nutcase helmet.)

I only made it through the detour because I followed someone else that actually knew where they were going. I like how there’s a giant concrete planter full of weeds right in the middle of the path you’re supposed to detour onto.

Yah that planter is bizarre. I guess it’s a relic from pre-closing of that portion of the street by the memorial, but it seems like they would do something with it. I scraped just the edge of the pedal on it by accident the other day. If only it were lighter, I would just do NPS’ job for them and move it.

    Whoa.

(No wonder I was confused, I tried looking at Satellite View and it showed me the wall side instead of the ramp.)

That looks perfect for some drills! It also looks like it’s not covered in slippery wet sticks and mud like the ped bridge is :p

I actually thought the same thing when I stumbled across it one day (hence the photo…I was like “what the eff is this?!?”). Also, if you’re up for some hills, the neighborhood just south of there has some good ones that are a bit less steep than some of the nastier hills in north Arlington…and the streets are very quiet.

    Not really…basically the ADA-compliant ramp from hell…

I’ve ridden that a few times. It is part of my route from Alexandria to Lorton. It is actually kind of fun. Someone needs to put a Strava Segment on that thing.

Edit. I called the segment Alexandria ZigZag.

Okay, NOW I feel like I got hit by a truck. :P Or a sidewalk.

I plan to ride gently to the river, roll in, and float merrily down to Alexandria. Steel floats, right?

I feel like Certifried needs to answer this one.

I have a friend in a wheelchair that I’m going to have sign up for Strava, just to KOM this thing

They ALL float down here. When you’re down here with us, you’ll float too!

Typical of me, I made the segment uphill instead of down.

I can’t imagine a downside to downhill racing on a wheel chair ramp

Riding up hills is fun when you can’t shift to your small chainring! :D

    Oh wait, no it’s not.

Just remember, turn your head and look through the turn…your body will take care of the rest without you even having to consciously do anything. That’s probably the one motorcycling skill that has helped improve my bike handling. We all sort of do it instinctively without even realizing it, but learning to do it deliberately will make a big difference.

I concentrated on this on the way home tonight and conquered the ped bridge!

Maybe NPS is reading this thread (wishful thinking or reality?) because the sidewalk was open this morning down by the Jefferson. It looked great too. So if they’re reading, thanks for ending the detours (hopefully permanently).
