ParticipantExcavation of the Empire State Building began on Jan 22, 1930. The building was officially opened by President Hoover on May 1, 1931. During construction, over 3,000 men were employed.
*sigh* The good old days….

ParticipantWho got rained on on the way home? I got a nice soaking from the Mall to the Fish Market, stopped by the Jefferson Memorial to take off my rain jacket.
One day i will hit 22 mph on you, Ohio Drive!Outside pocket of waterproof bag not waterproof. Chain is rubbing in big/5 and up, need to look at that. My brakes are crap in the wet.
Got mostly dry on the way home, tons of people on the trail (even more people stuck in car traffic!) so I took it slow, then got rained on some more up the hill. Beats Metro any day

I hit the first of the two storms. Literally I was just a few blocks from work going down the 15 St Cycletrack and the skies opened up. I toyed with trying to go for cover, but by then I was soaked. So, I pressed on. Ironically enough, by the time I got down to the Jefferson Memorial there was no rain for the remainder of the ride back.

ParticipantI got soaked twice. Once leaving Crystal City. It was dry south of the airport. Started raining again around the WW Bridge. Pouring by the time I got south of Belle View and the rest of the way home. My waterproof pannier worked like a charm. My clothes and laptop were bone dry.

Better be careful out there on other than on WNRD.

ParticipantGorgeous morning!
Had my first crash – tried to cut around a construction sign over by the Jefferson / Tidal Basin and hit the edge of the sidewalk wrong coming out of the grass.
Landed on the drivetrain side
Bike seems to be OK after I put the chain back on but I think my front derailleur could use some seeing to.
Cracked my helmet, scratched my sunglasses, gave myself a black eye/cheekbone, scraped my chin, tore my jersey (KNEW I should have bought that one yesterday!) & scraped my shoulder, bashed my elbow, and scraped my legs up a bit. My blinky helmet light came apart into pieces, one of which ended up in the middle of Ohio Drive, but fortunately did not get run over. Still works.
Thank you to everyone who stopped to ask if I was OK!
At work with ice on various bits of me now. Monitoring condition of head.

ParticipantThe scrapes and bruises will make you look badass, but the torn jersey is just wrong. Stupid construction zones.

Participantoh no! Glad you’re (mostly) OK! Sorry to hear about the crash

Yikes! glad you’re okay…NPS really needs to sort that area out and the detours are ridic…I saw some people salmoning down Basin/Ohio, basically riding into traffic merging onto 395…really bad idea.

Probably should’ve been doing this all along :p

Indeed :p
Well, maybe if I’d actually followed the detour instead of trying to be all badass, I wouldn’t have landed on my head :p

ParticipantAck, sorry to hear about your crash! Sounds like you survived ok for the most part, and yes, you will look badass.
I had my first crash less than 1 month after buying my first road bike, and broke my arm. I’ve since been fortunate enough to crash more gracefully since then (the last time I went over the handlebars but somehow landed on a grassy traffic island and only had a scrape on my ankle, a slightly shifted right shifter and some scratches on the front rim).

ParticipantI guess I’m way past due for some hurt. I haven’t fallen on a bike since I was 16 — foot stuck in the toe clips at a red light.

ParticipantHere’s me looking badass :p

I look so HAPPY in these pics!

ParticipantWow… even the pose and defiant glare is badass!
(ouch BTW… glad that you are vertical! Bummer about the lid, but this is why we wear them, so they can sacrifice themselves for us…)

ParticipantAt least you were wearing your Bell and not your Nutcase.
