Small Custis Trail Project – Starts July 20

To improve safety on the trail and streets in the Westover neighborhood, Arlington County will install a curb ramp, mark a crosswalk and add supporting signage and markings across from the existing Custis trailhead on Fairfax Drive between N Kennebec Street and N Kensington Street.

Construction is expected to begin the week of July 20th. Work hours will generally be 8 am to 2 pm, Monday through Friday, but you may see crews setting up starting at 7 am. You may experience inconveniences during construction such as pedestrian detours near the trailhead and temporary parking restrictions. Road users may encounter a lane closure, but access to Fairfax Drive should otherwise remain open. This construction is expected to take roughly one week, weather permitting.

The Custis trailhead currently exits onto the south side of Fairfax Drive, where there is no sidewalk. There is sidewalk on the north side of the street, but there is not a curb ramp or crosswalk to facilitate access to the trail. The current condition presents issues of safety, visibility and awareness for trail and road users alike.

How will this impact the already existing Custis detour that uses the I-66 pedestrian overpass there? Can they fill in the separation gap between the concrete slabs at the very north end of the bridge?

That’s the “I missed the Detour sign” path? Should be helpful in the dark

I use this crossing all the time and think this will be a huge improvement for both vehicles and bikes/peds. Neither can see each other at all due to the trees/brush and parked cars. Also, drivers have no idea to expect trail users to cross here because there’s no signage or visual clues indicating there’s a major trailhead at this mid-block location.
